I have a new 50 hp 4 stroke Mercury on my boat and when I looked at the prop nut there a two small metal tabs sticking out from the side of the
prop nut. Do I need to tap these into the nut in order to remove the nut,

And when I reinstall the nut how do I make sure the two metal tabs are sticking out from the nut (I have been told the two metal
tabs ensure the nut does not loosen on the prop shaft.

Thanks for any help.

yes, those are locking tabs to keep the nut from backing off.
