I could be totally wrong, but I dont get caught up in reel speeds and ratio. 6.2:1 and 6.3:1, is there really that much difference that it matters? Now I can see a huge difference between 5. and 8. speeds, especially when you are reeling like heck trying to catch up to the big girl whos speeding towards the boat! JMHO.

Only old guys will remember when the standard was 3.6:1. high speed was 4.7:1, and 5.1 was blazing fast. I don't remember for sure , but the 6+ gear ratios came along in either the late 80s or early 90s. But for all around use you cannot beat a 6.3 or 6.4:1. The other day my son and I were practicing pitching in the back yard. He had a 6.3:1 and I had an 8.1:1. No doubt I could get the bait back a lot quicker and make more pitches in an hour if it was a tournament. That is partly why I asked the question. Very interesting to hear other perspectives. I probably won't hesitate to throw a worm on a 6.3:1 now.

I still like 5.0 for cranking especially deep and for slow rolling big spinnerbaits. 6.3 for most other moving baits. and 7.3 for plastics/jigs

I use 6 speed ratio for spinnerbaits/chatter baits and square bills. 5 speed for most all crankbaits and 7+ for all bottom contact and topwater baits.

For someone like me who is still learning, this is great info. I just bought a 8 ratio reel for my jig rod. You can definitely tell a difference when burning it back. Not sure if it's necessarily a good thing. I probably won't need to buy another, since i have plenty of 6 and 7 ratio reels.
