Calling a bass tournament a derby, is a insult to the sport and everyone who participates in it. equivalent to calling golf, stick ball, or calling soccer, football, or calling basketball, hoop & dribble. It sounds totally retarded.

By the way, the answer to your question is, referring to someone who has been around for a while. And who has been there and done that many times. also implies that they are quite proficient in whatever, area they are an ol hand at.

The reason they call them a "Derby" is because they can't pronounce "Turn-a-ment" and instead say "Toy-na-ment," so not wanting to sound like a full blown Yankee, they now say "Derby!"
