Asian Carp in Texas

We tried to prevent this for years, but like the Zebra Mussel the Silver Carp has made its way into our waterways.

I really don’t like this, especially the proximity to Bois D Arc creek that will feed the new lake.

+1. Several of our natives are already doing so poorly, throwing Asian Carp into the mix only worsens the problem

Catch and release. The dream - to catch one of every species of Freshwater fish in our great state! If only I can resist Carp...

They all talk about how we need to worry about climate change like we can actually do something about it, when we can't even get rid of invasive species in our lakes in our country.

Just one more cast!

Just curious. For those who keep their boats on the water control; how do you control Zebra Mussels?

Is there anything that can be done to stop the spread? Arrowing them is all well and good but by the time there are enough of them to bow fish for... you lost.

Jet skis and wake boards and the like are a pain in my neck, but lots of people enjoy that sort of thing and I can only imagine it supports a lot of local businesses. How fun would wake boarding on Lewisville or Grapevine be if a 25lb fish was likely to jump out of nowhere and split open a kids eye lid?

This is not good news.

Time to break out the gillnets maybe?

The natural occurrence of alligator gar in the Red and Trinity rivers should help some.
They will eat any other fish that swims.

We should definitely promote healthy gar populations.

Holding an annual silver carp bow fishing competition during the silver carp spawn with 500 competitors would also help.

When the lionfish were introduced (stupid move) to the Caribbean, they reproduced fast and decimated many reef fish. There was a big effort to reduce their numbers by spearfishing, and other means. One of my friends was heading up the organization to try to eradicate them. I told him they should put out leaflets and signs that told the local natives that if you eat a lionfish, it acts as an aphrodisiac. They would have cleaned them out, shortly!

I hope gars like how the Asian Carp taste. IslandJim
