I sold my big boat a few years ago and have a little skiff now. Miss Whitney so much I am making the 3hr trek to fish it on Saturday. I still have my bait tank, but it will not fit in my skiff. Plan to bring some fresh caught dead shad and my artificial arsenal! Any tips on catching striper in the summer without live shad. I will not troll. I have had success in the past on slabs & swim baits, but only when it was cloudy. I have also had luck chumming the water with cut shad and dropping dead shad down after running through the live bait.

Have the striper or whites been surfacing lately?

Took the kids out this morning. We fished 7:30-9:30 and caught between 40-50 fish. Mostly small striper, one school of sandies. Caught all fish on top with a spook and whopper ploppers. Was fun fishing for the kids. Seems they’re surfacing all around the lake mid to south end, in random areas. We just rode around looking until we found surfacing fish. Straight across from McCowan ramp, around the river channel near those bluffs. And in front of the State Park area. Those were the 2 areas we caught the majority of our fish.

We were there Sunday. Spent most of our time outside the State Park area and to the west. They were surfacing all over that area-we were on ly there from about 10:45 til 2. Definitely an easy topwater bite. But, we were throwing slabs(Cordell) across the schooling fish and bouncing them off the bottom back to the boat. Picked up several keeper stripers that way. Then the heat ran us off.

You should try some perch. They will live a long time in a big minnow bucket and stripers will take them, just not as fast as shad.

I have seen them hitting on top along with the sandbass, out from the state park and big island. Around deeper points and structure, we have caught them on fresh, dead and cut shad along with fresh cut brim as well. Have always had lots of luck in deeper water with live brim.

Magnum flutter spoon bite will really start to pickup in the month of August and into the Fall. Look for road beds

I fished out of Steele Creek yesterday evening looking for crappie from my kayak. Then got into a huge school of sandbass and stripers. Caught them on top for about an hr until sundown. All of the stripers were short. I'll be launching mid lake today around McCown or the SP to see if I can get into some keeper sized schools.

Did you still see the school of sandies at the McCown ramp? I hope you catch some good fish.

We ended up launching at the SP. Got into another huge school of stripers but only 1 keeper after landing about 20. Chased them for about an hr and half in front of the state park.

Stripers were schooling the last two mornings from east of the island to up north of McGown. Most of the fish I caught were 16-17 inches. I tried going below the schooling fish with no success, but watching Stripers blow up on top water lures is so much fun it didn't matter. The schooling ended around 1:00 pm each day. I'm sore all over from reeling in fish. That's a good thing.

Thank you for your great input. I will try this weekend.

I am done trying to catch any stripers on the weekends now. The amount of clueless people running around out there is out of control. Maybe it bothers me because I'm mainly just a bass fisherman, but I had so many boats just pull up on top of me then literally right in front of where I was casting. And one woman driving a pontoon boat kept driving right through the middle of schooling fish. I guess they thought they were going to get out in front of them or something. The fun of catching stripers schooling like that just isn't work the aggravation that it causes...for me anyway. I'll try to hit them during the week from now on. I hope you guys are handling it better than me.

Weekend fishing has got to be tough. I am retired so I quit trying long ago. Crazy jet skis and grandkid pullers not looking where they are going. Big wakes breaking over the front of my boat.

Thank the good Lord I am retired and can fish during the week.
