I've never had to "defend" keeping bass or any other fish for that matter to eat....:)

I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that. Some lakes might actually benefit from selective harvest, others
may not. Also, depends on the size fish you're keeping-if you're keeping all the bigger bass that might hurt recruitment down
the road and hurt future spawns.

Personally I don't care if you're keeping bass as long as it doesn't hurt the fishery.

And if by bass you mean stripers as in the picture you can keep all you want up to the legal limit.

If you are going to eat the fish, keep all you want by your state's guidelines. I personally do not like bass all that much but I will chow down on some catfish and crappie .
Saltwater...hummmm, I can't think of anything I dislike coming from the sea.

catch and release is good for populations but not for size...from my understanding. Im past that whole you HAVE TO catch and release thinking like i was before I started educating myself on the matter. Selective harvest is not a bad thing if the conditions are right.

Think about table rock when MLF was there a couple/few years ago. All the haters were roasting that tourney....and it made sense because it was a straight dink fest! For the numbers all the guys caught there that day (it was stupid all around iirc)....i bet a place like that could use some harvesters.

Now with that said...its a real fine line. Aside from the hardcore bass guys and other catch and release types.....the general populations can be like savages when it comes to harvesting. Theyll take as many as they can. So i think generally i like the idea of CNR to be out there for the general public....because if not you can just clean a place out. As is i feel a lack of understanding is why you see guys harvest big fish still! Id much rather see a group of 4 guys on a pontoon limited out on 2-3 pound fish with maybe even a 4 sprinkled in, than I would ever want to see a 5+ pound fish in a bucket....and it gets worse the bigger they are. BUT....Joe Public sees the big ones as THE ONES to harvest. I wish we could educate those types on why we like to let the big ones go.

But we live in America....to each their own. if you dont belive that, take a plane somewhere.

very well said. I did extensive research on the matter last year and learned a lot myself.

I didn't bite but in many lakes the catch and release culture has gone too far IMHO. We need to harvest "unders" and small bass where legal to promote growth of the larger fish.

There are plenty of big bass caught at Toledo Bend and there are way more than enough harvesters there! food
