If I want to go out the day before a fishing trip (in this case, Lake Grapevine) and bait out a couple of spots with range cubes, what is the best (and cheapest) way to keep the cubes restricted to a certain area (or tree)? I have scattered them around a general area but not sure if the undertow simply takes them away from the spot. And assuming they dissolve over night, are you adding new cubes as you start your fishing?

Dump the entire bag or half a bag in the exact spot you want to fish and come back the next day and fish directly over the pile. No need for a sack or anything like that. There isn’t much current in the lake right now as the gates are closed.

IF you do want a cheap bag, go to the Dollar Store and buy a mesh zippered laundry bag. Will hold decent amount, and CHEAP...

5 Gallon bucket with lid and lot of 1/4" to 3/8" holes, depending on current, will last a lot longer if you want that route, and still pretty cheap and quick to make.

But... on the lake, I do as the Cat Master above says, just dump them in a hole.

Side note, I throw them out around my dock a lot also... shad like them, and makes throwing the net off the dock more efficient.

Good luck - tight lines

The idea of chumming cubes is to get the fish coming to the area to look for food. You want the fish to do some searching to find the cubes. If you dump the cubes the night before fishing they will be all gone by the morning, but the fish will still be in the area. Start by fishing without putting out cubes when you start fishing. If you are catching you don’t need to chum more. If the fish are not biting then throw out a couple of handfuls to try and get the fish feeding. You can over chum and fill the fish up so they will not bite. If you can chum for at least 3 days before you fish. If after chumming for 3 days you don’t get bites regularly then change locations.

I do a mix of sour grain and range cubes. The grain will get them in because of the smell but the range cubes will last longer.

Thanks guys for all the ideas. Have a tub of stubbys I'm anxious to put to work and a full bag of cubes. Just wondered if I should get an extra bag to be safe. I don't get to go catfishing very often...mainly bass fishing but the kids wanted to try for catfish and Grapevine is our closest lake. It's not exactly a great catfish lake (from what I've read) but a handful of channels will keep them happy. Only one creek (back of Twin Coves) that I know of with trees (to tie up to) and deeper water.

If your Bass fishing in a good place to tie up in the shade and fish take a bag of cubes with you and just chum some of the cubes in that spot. While your Bass fishing you can be Baiting a hole for Catfish.

If you have a fish basket you can dump them into the basket and then go to your chosen spot and hang the basket near the bottom.
You could tie it off the night before and return there the next morning or a little while before you start fishing.
Shake the basket now and then to get the fish excited if the bite slows down.

Just one more cast!

Burlap sack, the nylon bags stay in the lake forever

call it what you will...he is not definitely not anywhere near the top of the list for QB's that I would choose needing a FG or touchdown drive late in the game.
