What fuel type to yall use in the boat. I always put the premium gas in the boat. What do y’all use and is there any advantage to doing this. I have just been told to do it like this since I was a kid.

Read your owners manual. The engineers that designed that engine know what’s best for it. My Yamaha says 87 octane….that’s what goes in the tank.

The newer Yammie 4strokes, at least 2018, is recommended to run mid-grade 89.

Read your owners manual. The engineers that designed that engine know what’s best for it. My Yamaha says 87 octane….that’s what goes in the tank. Exactly!!!... The smart guys who designed and manufactured your engine know best... 87 octane, a fuel stabilizer and an injector cleaner is all you need... Running too high of an octane could actually be a determent to the outboard... Dan

Dan exactly, my old 1979 Mercury Black Max manual said premium would burn too hot and damage the motor...I always run regular and it is still running...

Yes, most of the old 2 strokes recommended 87, running higher could cause problems, and had also been said the new Yamahas recommend 89. 93 premium is not a good idea if its not made for it.

I find it hard to believe Mercury engineers would say it burns to hot

So if you had a choice to burn 87 non leaded or 91 leaded (no alcohol) which would it be.. If you didn’t use motor but like 5-6 months?

Lol you can’t get leaded gas it’s illegal at least for on the road vehicles. All gas is unleaded. All gas has ethanol unless marked ethanol free. For most outboards using regular unleaded is all you need. Ethanol free is the best choice if you can find it and if you don’t use your boat every couple weeks or if you don’t have newer ethanol approved fuel lines

Meant ethanol free…🙁. Believe the outboard Manuel states at least 87 octane but does not say you can’t use over. My dealer always recommended 89 because might lose some octane. but would think 91 would lose some if it sits a while. Motor seems to run better on non alcohol.

Been running super in my Merc 250 2 stroke for 7 years. Before that ran premium in my old 90hp 2 stroke for 17 years and knock on wood I haven’t had any issues yet
