So my coworker kindly gifted me an older Reddington FSF 4wt 2 piece combo. Nice combo but in technical terms this will be the lightest rod I own.

Will this rod be good for trout or maybe even smaller bass? I always hear a 5wt is the best all around rod for trout. The reel it came with is a 5/6 wt and the bottom piece feels like it has some back bone so maybe it will cast more like a 5 wt.

A 4 weight rod is plenty for most trout, IMHO. Small bass would be a lot of fun, too. I wouldn’t try flinging big deer-hair poppers or a Calciseau pig boat with it, though.

I have a friend that fishes Texas trout with a 2 wt and he does fine. Personally the smallest I use is a 6/7 for freshwater. I have broken a 5 wt and 6 wt carp fishing. If you use a 4 wt you just need lighter drag.

I fish a 4 wt most of the time in the rivers and creeks around North Texas and the Hill Country. If will be just fine assuming you throw appropriately sized flies.
