Huge one for sure, several pounds larger than the Texas current record. Glad they released it back to the river.

Holy catfish batman!
What a fish. Not sure that would fit in the kayak. Going to need a bigger boat.

I watched a Dieter Melhorn podcast on Youtude yesterday about this fish. It came out of the Roanoke RIver in NC which is down stream from Lake Gaston where the previous state record came from (121#) and Kerr Lake where the world record came from. Seems there is something in the water that is allowing these fish to thrive and grow to record size. The old state record stood for just a year I think. It was caught on 40 pound mono with 100 pound leader on a Mad Cat rod. 9/0 charlie brown hook and a 3" shad. An interesting note this fish was caught in the summer as was the world record. Zach Royce, a previous state record holder was the only one to catch his record in the "trophy season" of winter. If you notice from the pictures this fish is clean. It looks like a younger fish to me, not an old beat up fish like some do when they get to that size. These gents also went to great lengths to keep the fish alive until it could be weighed and certified and then released healthy. The mans name who caught this beast is Rocky Baker with an assist by Justin Clifton. Well done guys !

Yeah, it's a toady area for sure. I still have the In-Fisherman dvd's when they used to fish with ole Jimmy Weir over there, back in the day. Using the old AllStar Catfish rods & Calcutta 400's.
I've been on those Charlie Browns, they're sweet hooks.

Iโve fished both Buggs Island and Gaston 6 yrs ago Tim. Both are huge and deep like Texoma but gets very little pressure. They are out in the middle of nowhere which helps protect the fish. I fished with Zakk on Gaston which is how I got into planer boarding and he told me the reason the fish are so big is because there are no major cityโs near by. We were one of the only boats on the lake and it was a weekend. Texoma would have produced a fish of that caliber or much larger long ago if there werenโt so many redneck okies (Iโm a redneck too so no offense) pulling them out of there. My niece married one of those okie Striper guides and they jug every day while Striper fishing and they keep their big fish and always have. He told me all his guide buddies pretty much all do that and that itโs in their culture. Needless to say we never got along and she ended up divorcing the guy. Twok has a chance to produce a mega fish one day but every time I stay at Anchor Inn I see guys at the cleaning station with Toads so eventually it will start declining. Makes me sick to see a 30 yr old fish pulled out of the lake but some guys are just selfish and uneducated.
