I have been fishing pretty much all my life, but never really species specific. Take a few poles and set each one differently and lure fish between bites. With no boat and not really any partner, I e been attempting to "figure out" crappie fishing as I think they are just about the best eating fish around. I primarily fish Lake Tyler since it's literally a couple miles away. Been to the Boulders a fair amount here recently, had a little success a few meals and a lot of time drowning various baits and attempting to jig. Any recourses I should look in to to help learn? Maybe someone local to show me the ropes with a jig? Im pretty much dumbfounded when it comes to artificial, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. You can learn a lot about crappie fishing from the video's post here on the forum. You can also look up Richard Gene the fishing machine on you tube. He has video's of catching all kinds of fish and how he does it. Good luck fishing!

If you want to learn about jig fishing, go for a half day with a good guide. I don’t think you’ll ever be really successful crappie fishing without a boat, because for so much of the year they are in deeper water. That said, you don’t need a $50,000 rig to catch crappie. You can do it from a kayak or a jonboat. Good luck !

If you watch YouTube subscribe to “Asleep at the Reel” it is a mostly crappie fishing show and Chris is an absolutely top notch guy based out of Tyler so he does a lot of crappie fishing local but it is mostly out of a boat. There is also another guy I don’t personally know but he does some bank fishing locally. His channel is “903 fishing” or “903 Outdoors” should be easy to find…you can learn a lot from them.
Crappie fishing from the bank will be tough except for Feb-Apri but as said above it doesn’t take a big expensive boat to get on the water. A lot of crappie are caught in the spring from shore or near shore out of kayaks or John boats on lake Tyler up the lake by the 64 bridge.
Bonehead Tackle is a local company who makes great plastics for crappie and is in Noonday. Their store is small but has everything you need as far as plastics for crappie fishing plus line, reels and rods to check out too. I use their plastics but different jigheads, rods and reels. Walmart carries a small selection of their baits at the store on 110 just a few miles north of you too.
Lakeside tackle is a local mobile trailer based crappie store. He sets up at certain events and has a ton of stuff for only being a trailer. He does online sales as well.
I tie hand ties and tie way more than I use because it is relaxing to me and give them to people I know. Next time I tie some up I’ll let you know and you can have some, they may not be the best but you can’t beat the price lol.
If my schedule ever slows down enough that I get to get back to fishing I will try to take you out on Tyler and show you what I know…it won’t take long since it isn’t much!
Jason
