Will be moving from Honolulu, Hawaii to Frisco, Texas in the next few months. Retiring after 26 years of service in the U.S. Navy. I have a Hobie Pro Angler 14 kayak that I will be fishing from. I've caught Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi, and all other sorts of pelagics off my yak out here but my real love is fishing for Crappie and Bluegill. I'm originally from Ohio and I caught them growing up. Being new to TX I'm looking for lakes around Frisco that look like would hold an abundant amount of Crappie. I keep seeing Lavon Lake is the place to go. I've also heard there are a ton of water snakes out there. Is that true? Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

Tightlines,
Paul

Congratulations on Retirement!

Plenty of lakes with Crappie. I'm in McKinney right next door to Frisco.

Lake Lewisville about 5 minutes from Frisco.
Lake LAVON about 25 minutes from Frisco.
Ray Roberts about 25 minutes from Frisco.
Lake Tawakoni about 1:30 from Frisco.
Lake Fork about 1:40 from Frisco.

Other Kayak folks on here can help get you pointed in the right direction.

Shoot me a message and I'll try to help you anyway I can.

Welcome to Texas! thumb

I'll also add Texoma as an excellent crappie lake (as well as other species). It's a bit of a drive from Frisco, but I've kayaked up there quote a bit. Haggerman is a nice place to paddle.

Another good paddle lake IMO is coffee Mill. Again, it's a bit of a drive, but it doesn't get near the boat traffic that the other large reservoirs get. Good crappie and sunfish populations too.

Lewisville- little Elm boat ramp-a bridge and plenty of trees to your right. I’ve seen kayaks launch at Cottonwood and fish the trees to the left of the marina. Learn to spot bois-d-arc trees.
Ray Roberts-Buck Creek- two bridges and thousands of trees for as far as you can paddle.

Paul, Congrats on the retirement and welcome to Texas! When you get a chance, reach out to fishin'aholic2 on here. He's a local yak guy with a ton of info for North Texas. He's on youtube as KidKrappie. He just posted a video from Lake Lavon a few days ago. There's a bunch of yakkers on here that I'm sure will drop you some good info.

If you live Frisco my advise is go to Texoma. You can drive up preston road and fish what I believe to be the best fishery in the State.

John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.

Pretty much crappie in all Texas lakes, and Fork ranked #2 crappie lake in the country.

Thank you for the info. I hate snakes. Saw a ton of them when I was stationed in MD.

Welcome Paul! I'm in McKinney, right next door. Others have mentioned the big lakes around here, but you can always try McKinney Towne Lake. Its a shallow lake with heavy vegetation so you can catch big ol' gills out there. Rumor has it that Towne Lake also has crappie but I've never had luck targeting them.

Snake wise, you'll probably see more snakes in the community ponds than in the big lakes. Good luck!
