 Lake Whitney and umbrella rigs

Was gonna try and hit Whitney this weekend trolling some umbrella rigs for stripers. Anybody do any good on umbrella rigs out there? Have several I plan to use with bucktail jigs tipped with grubs and some swim baits on the other one. Plan to find the thermocline then find the water right above it and troll through there and hope to come across some, if we do then we might stop and jig or cast to them. Any tips or tricks for trolling umbrella rigs on Whitney?

Theoretically, that all sounds right through I’d tell ya it’s a lot more difficult than it was 5 years ago with all the guides on the lake now.

Theoretically, that all sounds right through I’d tell ya it’s a lot more difficult than it was 5 years ago with all the guides on the lake now. Most of my fishing plans turn out like that, sounds easier then it is. Lol. The guides didn’t like me trying to tie off to their boat last time either.

I've caught some decent size stripers on umbrella rigs at Whitney but I have stopped using them. The reason I quit was because there is an abundance of 15 inch stripers and they will hit just about anything and any size bait you put on the umbrella rigs. So I found I was constantly reeling in undersize stripers and then having to go thru the process of resetting the umbrella rig which is a little more involved versus a single lure.

Anejo is right. Could not keep the 12-16" stripers off our rigs last weekend, and could not catch much else. We lucked into a few large sandbass, black bass and large brim.

Fish whitney alot, use umbrella rigs trolling for stripers. To get deep to big fish, use 8 blades rigs, 4" to 6" swim baits or large jigs with large flutes. First you have to find them. Takes alot to track them down. To us about 4 years to learn the lake and technique. Troll about 2.8 mph, letting out about 100 yards of line.

If I did catch a big-un, it would take me an hour to get him in. Lol

has anyone tried to run the Arig behind a dipsy diver type device to get them deeper? the few time I have tried them I dont think they ever got 8ft down

Downrigger to get them deeper. Those manual ones aren't too expensive, but it becomes cumbersome to operate, especially if your fishing by yourself.
