Its the best. I watched some clips on how to make them on YouTube and went to town and made 6.
Gave it a whirl for the first time a week ago and really enjoyed it. Fishing the south side of Grapevine in a large creek arm I caught 2 channel cat and 3 blue cats all right at 3lbs. Also "caught" about a 5 foot gar. Or more like he caught me.
I was using cut bluegill that I cast netted from a local park pond. I learned you have to go VERY early or the jogger "Karen" and "Ken" types will trip out on you for taking their "pet" fish, meanwhile there are 600,000 3 inch bluegill in a half acre pond.
Picked myself up a fish trap and planted it down there this morning to see if I can get some bait the day before and save time since I plan to go out tomorrow early.
I can paddle around, look on the graph for what I think are cats and bait, deploy jugs, then back off and bass fish while watching my giant bobbers. Nothing like being a kid waiting for that bobber to go down. Its exciting when one pops under then takes off running... Big kid fishing.
Also picked myself up an electric fillet knife, a cordless one. Makes life sooo much easier. Can clean the fish at the lake and just bring home fillets, rest goes in the dumpster at the lake... not on the side of my house, when the trash man does not come for 6 more days, it develops a smell.
Few questions. Thoughts on how to tag them? I have been attaching a ziplock sandwhich bag to swivel on the bottom of the jug. On the baggie I write the info. One of them I used a rubberband to hold the baggie on. This works, just wondering if there is some better way I am not thinking of.
Also, hook size, looking for eaters but have been using 5/0 in hopes of also maybe being able to handle a bigger fish should one happen by. That said, the jugs went down like twice for every one fish, they were not getting hooked up. Thinking maybe the 4/0 might work better.
I will keep yall posted on my new adventure! More bass n jugs tomorrow.
All tips welcome.

Few of my jugs. This dude was pissed!! Jumped twice when I got him close to the kayak and dang near landed inside of it. At that point I questioned the intelligence of bringing this fish close to the kayak anymore LOL.

Sweet!
I think that one should have been taken ashore to land! That was the plan! The closest proper beaching area took me a while to get to. As I got close the hook popped out. I wasn't terribly upset by that outcome. He was a surly son of a gun.

Are your jugs free floating or static to the bottom? I found my hook up ratio was better with my jugs with 2.5 lbs of weight as opposed to 3oz weight. Hook size3/0 or 5/0 did not make a difference.. They get more resistance with the heavier weight thus increasing hookups.. At least that is what works for me.

A gar is 50% teeth and 50% bad attitude.

First run with the bluegill trap. Soaked from 8am to 6pm. Used a can of tuna that I had punctured multiple times to kind of bait the trap. Got 7 gills and a baby turtle. Ended up catching about 10 bluegill with the fly rod. Let the big ones go and kept the little ones. That combined with what I got in the cast net this morning I've got more than enough bait.

Still experimenting with weight and placement since I'm brand new to this. Definitely saw a lot of stuff online about using bricks etc but for some reason that doesn't interest me as much. One reason perhaps being that loading up a kayak with bricks is not ideal lol Also I like the idea of the bait drifting a few feet off the bottom and moving through certain areas I'm targeting versus being static.

Just don't let the GW see you use a cast net in a community pond.

30 Years (or more) ago, I learned how to Jug fish from this guy named Jedd. At the time I worked with his brother. Have a look at the videos on his channel. We used to fish the sub-impoundments of Rend Lake in Southern Illinois. Has a patent on these PVC end caps that he makes the jugs out of. The size of the jug is based on the length of the piece of PVC you use. These were very effective at catching Flatheads baited with bream.
