I have a lake in my neighborhood . I was thinking of putting two big bluegills on 2 rods and leaving them overnight . Basically tying the rods to separate trees . Just living the big baits out all night .

Thoughts ? Has anybody done this just curious .

As the Mighty Azul peers into his magic Crystal ball I see the sun coming up and 2 rods with no bait left on the hooks....🧙‍♂️🔮

I’m sure guys have done it and caught a fish but I’ve fallen asleep with many rods in the rod holder and the next morning the hooks are usually all bare. You’d be better off with set line like a limb line or a trot line. Something that limits their mobility after they are hooked. If your using a rod and reel you need to be there when the rod goes down if you want to catch the fish. Go soak those bluegills in the evening for an hour while you drink a couple of beers. Problem solved.

We go camping quite often and we always bait out our line before going to bed. Usually 4 rods and on average have 1 or if a good night 2 blues on the line when we get up. Our rods are in rod holders. I would guess about 30% success rate for us.

In my own personal experience even with trot lines if you leave lines unattended too long you will miss a lot of fish . Catfish usually won’t just sit on the line and patiently wait for you to retrieve them . They will barrell roll and fight and flop until they get tired and rest and do it again until they get off .

When I run lines for more than a day they get checked no less than every 2 hours and we go all day and night and sneak in naps here and ther . And then at the end of that 2 or 3 day run you finally have to get a good couple hours of sleep to go pull all your lines in and clean fish and pack it all up. Those lines usually soak in the weee hours of the morning for 4-8 hours untouched . When I run them one last time they usually have really small fish , turtles , and bent or semi straightend out hooks !!! those hooks had big fish on them and you have missed them because they won’t stay on long

And as is exciting as it is to get one of those chewed up hooks it’s also severely disappointing to know that you lost that fish cause you weren’t there .

Now on a side note to that I’ve heard of old timers chunking big live baits out there off of a real strong but real flexible limbs to soak all night and coming back in the morning and having a tank on the other end . But that’s old folks talking I’ve never seen it proven lol

Hope this helps

I've caught fish this way but like others have said, it's a very low success rate. Won't say it's a waste of time but keep your expectations low.

May only have stolen bait. May only have one fish for 6 rods. You'll have zero fish if bait isn't in the water. Follow me for more complex tips.
