To each brake on the both sides of a reel? I can't figure out how they differ, or do they work together to get the job done. The one by the crank handle and the one on the outside of the reel. Thanks

They are for centering the spool in the frame!!! So line doesn't get in side the reel.

I would agree with you , but then we would both be WRONG !!!!!

The one you are palming is the cast control brake, either centrifugal or magnetic (does the job your thumb should do) the knob by the spool is the adjustment for the weight of the bait you are throwing.

So the one by the crank handle adjusts how much force it lets the weight of the bait put on the spool to pull at the spool.

They should be used togather.... I hate when people say on just use the tension knob to take out the side to side movement lol

The knob by the handle controls how fast your bait falls off the spool initially. The brakes control the end of your cast. (replacing or helping your thumb at the end of the cast)

BB1's answer is my answer - but to add... Spool Tension adjustment (crank handle side) is not truly a brake at all. Reason, it adjusts the speed from the beginning of a cast rather than the speed of the spool generated during the cast. Think of it as a governor on your accelerator!

Guess so. I have always taught kids or new bait cast people to adjust that knob so the bait will slowly fall and stop on its own when it touches the floor. Then the magnetic or centrifugal I set up pretty tight, maybe 4 brakes or the dial on 6-8 for a new caster until they gain confidence.

If you have ever taken the spool out of a reel you would know that the long shaft on the spool comes in contact with the knob by the reel handle. The tighter you have it the more pressure it has on the spool. The one on the other side is either controlled by magnets or brakes that work on a centrifical force to fine tune your cast.

Tie on the lure you are going to throw. Hold your rod at a 45 degree angle with your lure dangling about a foot below the rod tip. The spool tension knob will be on the side of your reel along with the cranking handle. Push the thumb bar. This knob will control how fast the lure falls. If it doesn't fall, loosen the knob. If it falls too fast, tighten up the knob. The lure should fall and when it hits the floor, your spool should not backlash. After your have the tension knob adjusted properly, set the centrifugal (or magnetic) "brakes" as high as possible. Start making practice casts. At first, you will not be able to cast very far. Lessen the brake adjustment one setting a time and make more practice casts. Eventually you will begin to get minor back lashes. At that point, increase the adjustment one click back on the brake.

The more time you spend fishing with a bait caster, the better you will get at it. But remember, no bait caster is "backlash proof."

Be safe,

This is exactly how you set up a reel and learn how to get better at at casting. The Daiwa SV TW is as backlash proof as it gets. You can set up this reel just like Rayzor explained and you can make a long cast and never thumb the spool.
