Boy, the deck was stacked against us on Saturday. We had flooded conditions, lake was still about 7 feet above full pool. We had a thermocline at about 15 feet. We're still in the middle of the spawn.. And, we had slick water, dead flat calm. My expectations were low.
Bait has moved out of the marina for the past few weeks. Not sure why but I see guys throwing for hours off the dock and not catching much. If you just go out in the lake they are still in predictable spots so we just change our schedule and catch bait after we shove off.
The thermocline was at 15 feet! That made a lot of the lake unfishable. We concentrated on areas shallower than 15 feet, but in less than about 10 feet, the water was over 90 degrees so it seemed the fish were staying away from that too. We found fish on points in 12 - 15 feet of water. From sun up until about 9:00 they were active feeding and after that they seemed to get lock jaw. We caught several fish in the 3 to 7 pound range. Nana said she wanted fish for dinner so we obliged. After about 9:00 the knuckleheads start coming out anyway so on the weekends we get off the water early and head for the pool. Fish early, chillin and grillin after that. Good way to spend the weekend.
All the fish we cleaned were spawned out females except one and he had marks from being on the nest and he was pretty skinny based on the size of his head. Looking forward to that post spawn bite when the big girls are hungry! Won't be long now...
Happy fathers day to all the dads.

It’s that time of year when things get tough Tim! Water is heating up rapidly and the thermocline is setting in. They are dropping the lake levels which makes fish scatter. Big fish are on their nests not eating , and the wind only blows half the time. Add to that the bite is usually over by 10 am.
