Well after a few amazing days on RC, me and pops caught well over 150 white bass Wednesday morning, we we’re the only boat within a mile from us. Thursday and Friday wasn’t quite as good but still boated well over a 100 Thursday and almost a 100 Friday morning! All caught on top water Berkeley spin bombs or on a whiteish bomber shallow diving crank bait. Pops said that was the best fishing he’s had in years! All caught and released!

After all the white bass we decided to troll for some hybrids off of pelican island Thursday night and pops got him a n [
ice one on an A rig trolling storm wild eye swim shad. Then we caught some shad Friday night and this morning and tried to suspend fish some hybrids off of windsock point with fresh shad. I’ve attached a picture of my graph, but not a single bite! I was using my heavy duty catfish rods with pro cat hi visibility green and power pro low vis moss green braid, does line color make a big difference on hybrids? I mean we we’re sitting in the middle of shad busting the surface, graph is lighting up, baits positioned 2-4 feet above them and NOTHING! Pops mentioned they must be seeing the line.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Your not holding your mouth right.. Don't think line color makes any difference. Speed, or size would be my guess..

Best answer i have..

We weren’t doing something right. Shad we’re in the 3-4 inch range and we were spot locked fishing straight down with 3 rods. All at a little different depth but still at or above the top mark of fish.

I use 17-20lb fluorocarbon leader below high viz line. Was your shad really frisky? Sometimes the condition of the shad makes a difference…

I’ll try and use a mono of Fluoro leader next time. They were alive when I put them on but threadfins die quickly. Tried hooking them through the nose, above the anal fin, through the eyes, they all died pretty quickly.

I've never used high viz line while fishing for hybrids. So I can't say that for sure the line didn't help.
I would have put on a mono leader that was at least 36in.

I use 20-30 pound bright green braid and catch fish all the time so I'm not sure line color makes any difference. On my live bait rods I use 20 pound mono leaders that are also bright green and never had an issue. But RC may be clearer and it might make some difference but I don't think these fish are line shy by any means. I even used weedeater string as leader material for downrigging on a double up rig and hybrids didn't care one bit.

Fish bite two times a day, before you get there and after you leave : )

Weed eater string huh? 😂 I should’ve used a mono leader but didn’t wanna go grab some and tie one on. Didn’t catch any on the rattle trap of slab either so maybe they just weren’t ready to bite yet. I’m sure they got hungry once we left! I didn’t think hybrids were line shy either. Thanks for choking in buddy! BTW, like the videos!

I think Hybrids can just naturally be finicky fish, ime. It seems that it can be feast or famine when it comes to them. I've had days where I was fishing super stained water (natural lake color) and pulled out 60 an hour. Same lake next week, same school, caught 9. Had days where you get them hot on live shad then all of a sudden they're eating the cut shad faster. But cut shad first, wouldn't do it. Line color didn't matter in these instances. At PK (striper) I use 2.5' of flouro, always. As a leader. So it's natural that I use that same set up for Hybrids. I tend to throw artificials for Striper at PK/Whitney/Gbury with straight flouro. I haven't caught many Hybrids on artificials but the times I have I didn't notice that I had to use any particular line color.
