Made the two hour drive to Monticello, Friday afternoon. It was hot. I was in slow motion unloading and carrying all my [censored] down to the water. Not a soul fishing the lake when I got there, not even from the bank. Finally on the water at 4:00 and make short paddle to the big bridge.. found fish on graph in 8 ft of water on edge of a rocks dropping quickly to 14.. wind blowing current through bridge and the fish were just out of the current. Get hit on first cast crawling it slow and barely ticking bottom and pause to let it start to rise.. felt the tap and set hook. Had it on for a second and it pulled off. Make second cast to same spot and hook up with a good one. Get it to the surface and it looks to be around 5 to 5.5 lbs. Quit reeling for a second to grab net, and sucker jumps and throws bait. Third cast .. land fish, fourth cast land fish, then it got even better. I was getting hit on almost every cast and if I didn't get hook in fish, I'd get hit again. For about an hour it was as good as it gets. No big ones but no dinks either.

Nothing on the 7 inch swimbait today..

Tried a frog, spinner bait, fluke, and squarebill... not a bite. Paddled back to the big bridge as sun was going down and made a few more casts and got one near where I put the kayak in.

That 6xd crankbait in bass color has been working better than anything I’ve thrown the last two weeks. Restocked at Walmart the other day as I was down to my last one. Didn’t realize it was a 6xd.. thought I’d been throwing a 5xd at Palestine. All the fish I’ve caught the last two trips have been same slow retrieve, just barely ticking rocks (so I don’t get hung up) then stopping retrieve to let bait slowly start to rise.. all fish caught on slack line. Very subtle bite as I’m setting hook on anything that doesn’t seem right. Foul hooked several today.

cheers Nice to have met you and Eric! Caught most on 6xd at big bridge starting out and at end of day, a few on flutter spoon and some on swim jig.. white bass and catfish on crank bait. Stayed deep all day. Fish were most active in 10 to 12 feet of water. Lots of inactive suspended fish.

Very subtle bite.. lots of paddling. Stopped to watch fireworks in Pittsburg on the way home... didn’t know anything about it and just pulled off the road and watched for 20 minutes. A good 4th of July!
