I'm headed to the Gorge mid August. I am hoping to jig up some lake trout in deep water out of my kayak. Probably fish the east side around Fire Hole or just south of there. After that I plan on following the Green River to Its source the Green River Lakes, for a few days, then down south to west Colorado and the Grand Mesa for about a week. If anyone has some pointers or ideas about fishing these areas I sure would like to hear them. I am familiar with the Mesa in that this will be my 6th year in a row. Also if you are interested in joining me, or meeting up on the trail, let me know, looks like I'll be solo again this year...Lawton

Just getting into this forum. I have been to the flaming gorge, but haven't explored it or fished it. Curious how your experience turned out. Post up if you went.

if it ain't chartreuse, it's got no use.

Hey Todd: I plan on going mid August, to the Gorge then up the Green River to its source. Also plan to hang around Pinedale area finger lakes. Baybe up to Bull Reservoir, before heading to the Grand Mesa. Probably fish the Mesa and the Gunnison for about a week. If you want to go along or meet on the trail and I will send you my general itinerary

Yes sir, if your calendar was back a few weeks, I would make that happen. See I am a teacher and go back to work Aug 3.

The Mesa...which lakes are your targeting? I was just there last month. Caught some pretty colored up Cuts. First time catching any that had all their spawning colors. Pinedale - just fishing still water or looking at a river also?

Yea Todd moving the schedule ahead that much is not doable. I am fishing a beach tournament this next weekend, and still have freeze damage repairs on my home. I like a lot of the lakes on the Mesa, and am familiar with about 25 on the Surface Creek side, although I may branch out some this year. As to the Pinedale area, almost all of the finger lakes hold lake trout, as well as some of the lakes on the 300 loop. I will fish the Green River and some other flowing water, I'm just not much of a hike in guy. 1/2 mile from the tailgate is tops, unless I'm in the kayak

Hey Zero, this thread got a little fragmented. It was titled Flaming Gorge, and I think the Gorge is what you are talking about, not the Mesa. When you say catch trout, are you talking about browns, cuts, bows, brooks, or what I'm looking for lakes? Please give me more info, seeing that you do fish there...Lawton

This Cut is from the Mesa. Good luck in the Gorge and let us know how your trip goes. I have the Gorge 'on my list'.

Are you going to be jigging or glide bait fishing the Gorge?
Clear, deep water and big lakers.
Stop in at the brewery in Pinedale and try one of Craig's beers, new brewer at Wind River Brewing.

If the wind and weather permits, I am hoping to fish the Gorge for several days. That will include jigging and slow deep trolling a swim bait, heck I might even try an umbrella rig.

It looks like the Fire Hole Canyon area on Flaming Gorge might be a little shallow in depth for the lake trout that I am looking for. I found an area south of there in upper marsh creek that looks good on satellite. I wanted to camp and fish on the eastern shore, but am open to any and all suggestions. I plan on leaving home in Waller on August 15th pulling my camp/ kayak trailer and arriving at the gorge mid day on the 18th. Lake trout are my target on the gorge, that I intend to fish for two or three days. After that on up the green river to the finger lakes area around Pinedale, then to the 300 loop between Atlantic City and Lander, fishing 3 or 4 lakes on the loop. Back south after the loop to mid-western Colorado and the Grand Mesa. I will camp and fish this area including the Gunnison river for about a week, then head home.
