Having not been to Fairfield since October, we thought we would check it out. We also wanted to try to stay away from large Memorial day crowds, as it was at Lake Bastrop yesterday. It was only 68 degrees when we got to the lake. Hmmm. To make a long story short, if you want hydrilla, Fairfield still has a ton. It has so much, that as crankbait fishermen, we really had a hard time. The last time we were on the lake last fall, there were pronounced drop offs outside in the hydrilla. Not this year; it's growing everywhere. There is also an incredible amount of green filamentous algae. Yuk. My Wife caught 3 bass and I only had two. All were caught on small crankbaits. I personally also tried a spinnerbait, a lipless crankbait way off shore, soft plastic swimbait, sub-surface crank, buzz frog, and swimming jig. Nope.

It was a disappointing day of fishing but the absolute worse thing was the dang bugs. I don't know what the heck was eating us up but we couldn't get away from them. They weren't horse flies or mosquitoes. We bathed in mosquito repellent but it didn't help much. The only thing that helped somewhat was a strong wind. We would fish some areas that just weren't protected and couldn't fish for long there.

Probably Buffalo gnats. Avon’s Skinso soft is very effective with gnats.

gnats ate me alive last time I was there!!

Whatever they were, they were really small. Is Avon even in business anymore?
