I just got a 2.5hp 4-stroke motor for my small jon boat. Ethanol gas damaged my 90 hp 2-stroke over many years. Can the same thing happen to the 2.5hp, 4-stroke kicker? Hopefully E10 (10% ethanol) won't hurt the motor seeing as how no gas station near me sells non-ethanol gas.

Ethanol don't damage motors, neglect does.

I don't think E10 is a problem for engines designed to run on it. I think the main thing with E10 is not to let it sit. I have easy access to ethanol free and only use it in my 2 cycle premix for lawn equipment. I used it in the boat for a while because of the 95 gallon tank. I don't any more. The Optimax does fine on E10.

Update: I called Mercury outboard and this is what I was told: 1. make sure 10% ethanol is max. Higher than that (E15)- no good. Mobil and Exxon always mix no more than 10% ethanol (E10). 2. use Stabil gas treatment to help with water/ gas separation due to ethanol 3. as long as Stabil or some other gas treatment is used, using stored gas shouldn't be a problem - even through the winter 4. a higher octane than regular (81) is not always good or advantageous
