I'm looking for advice on a all around crankbait rod that will throw just about any crankbait. I do a lot of kayak fishing and want to stay in a 4 rod set up. I have 3 rods now and want a crankbait rod. What is a good all around crankbait that will throw most crankbaits? I have a few I am looking at one is the Phenix Crankbait Casting Rod Glass 7'0", other is the ST. Croix Mojo Bass Glass 7'2". Any other suggestions or experience with either of these 2 rods would be great. Will probe pair the rod with the Abu Garcia Revo Winch.

I throw a med/heavy fast action 6'-6" St Croix and like it a lot. Good backbone and nice action on the tip (not too fast).

When I moved from a bass boat to a Kayak, I went from 7' to 7'-6" rods down to 6'-6" rods. I feel like the shorter rods are much easier to cast from a seated position. Also, when I stand, I can flip from "inside" the kayak with a shorter rod (something that I could not master with a 7' rod out of a kayak).

I'm sure I have lost a few fish because of the shorter rods. I realize that give up a few feet of cast reach and that I give up some advantage on the hook set. However, I believe that I have made up for this by lure placement with accurate casting/flipping.

This is just my two cents...

My favorite all around rod for both salt and fresh water fishing is a StCroix Avid 7' medium power fast tip, rated 10 to 17 lb test, full cork grip. I think its the grip that swayed me years ago when I checked out every thing I could get my hands on. Its built up just right and it so comfortable in my hands for both casting and fighting fish. I don't own a rod that isn't full cork. Never could get use to feel of two handed casting any of the spilt grips. Has handled over 100 different species of fish on this one rod.. from bass to tarpon, snook, bonefish.. just a great rod for the money in my opinion.




Have a curado 300 ej on it now and use it mainly for swim baits and 6xd

For my small crankbaits I use a Dobyns Rods Boom Boom DC 705CB FR and for my bigger ones I use a Dobyns Rods Champion XP DC 805CB.

The BPS Crankin stick is a very good all around rod. I use the Medium fast for everything from 1.5 square bills, to 5xds.

Look at some of the saltwater popping rods in graphite. I used a glass rod for crankbaits for years, but got tired of the extra weight, especially on days when I made a ton of casts. I went on a redfish trip out of Venice one year and the guide had a couple of popping rods that I used and I could tell they would make great crankbait rods. Now those are all I use for small to semi-large crankbaits.

agree with this. I have an older Allstar MH-Moderate "Poppin" rod that is great for 1.5's+

I made up a bunch of pistol grip rods for using in small boats while seated. I have found that a long handle just gets in the way if I'm sitting down. I think 6'6" is about as long as I can go with a pistol grip.

In a kayak, you are in a low leverage situation—every time you set the hook, you and your kayak move toward the fish.

Thus, I wouldn’t throw a glass rod from a kayak.
