Get rid of the sickle hooks… A good jig hook and you will not lose fish. Does not matter on the hook set with a good hook. I lose very minimal fish (seriously I’d say maybe one fish every 3-4 trips) and do not carry a net. Just sling them in with the huckabee rods.

use those jig heads with little issue, usually when I have to pull off a tree or something and it makes it weak from then on
just my experiences but once they lose shape, I have all sizes get off not just the big ones even though I try to get it back to original shape. once weakened, better off tying on a new one

So have I & I still do. IMHO every body will miss one from time to time that`s just the nature of the sport .No matter what hook you use but when it`s occurring too often just simply change it out. Hooks just like any thing else are a personal preference.

Is the rod to heavy for the hook? Is the hook to light to stand up to the big ones? Perhaps I just need to use a net? I’ve tried pulling into them on the hook set, and I have tried ripping their lips off on the hook set. The end result is still the same: I’m losing a lot big crappie on these 1/8 oz Bx jig heads when I go to lift them out of the water.

My thoughts: this specific hook isn’t big enough to Boat flip big crappie. I need to try a diff style jig or start using a net.
Here’s what my hook looked like after landing the 14.5” in the below pic. I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

Saturday’s trip was much slower than last week’s. Most were caught in ~20 fow, 12-14’ down using white/chart jigs. Still catching lots of short fish.

What`s wrong with this set up? NOTHING!

I sickle hook made correctly is very strong due to it being thicker in the sickle, by forging,.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Since I use braid I won't use those thin wire hooks.... That's what was bad about those sickle style hooks some were thinner and would bend easily even so much so that you would lose fish....
If you want better hooks hit Steve up over there at Limits Tackle and tell him what problem you've been having and let him recommend what you'll need....
He has those steelhead hooks that are top of the line and his j hook lineup gets the job done also.....
If you just have to have sickle style hooks he has some that you won't have that straightening out problem.....

Bonehead jig heads are horrible. I used to loose a lot of fish using them.

I love their baits but don’t like the jigheads. I lost more fish and worse lost fish and baits…I would just feel in a loop knot because the gap in the eye was so large.

^^^^

1 Lake Fork Slab on a brand new BX 1/4oz jighead and the hook bent Worse than that!

Ordered some of the Victory Hooks in Aberdeen Style. So far every eye is 100% closed , perfect for braid. Super Sharp Too!

I'd Tack That!!
