Businesses, unions, politics, military, religion, even education......plus just about everything else y'all can think of.....it's all about money.
Sad, but believable. This has been the history of mankind.
Look! Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's an EMP!

These people are getting a severance package that includes a weeks pay for each year of service plus bonus weeks added based on length of service, they also get all un-used vacation pay and accrued vacation time paid out in full. They get their insurance paid thru the end of the year as well. The company is also providing job placement assistance.

I guess i'm just a dinosaur. I get paid to do a job so I do it.
I'm actively looking for another job (hopefully in a management position). I've been a manager in the production department for 20 years.

Good for you Fullofit. Sounds like the company is being more than fair. If one is still on the payroll, they need to work. They are entitled to vacation time or pay but not sick time unless they are sick. Good luck in finding a job of your liking.

Whenever I've closed a plant, I've always included a retention bonus in addition to the severance bonus. That bonus is only paid out if they show up and do good work through the remainder of their specified time. It avoids this exact situation.

Every company that I worked for would pay unused vacation days to terminated employees. If I were about to be out of a job I would not be taking any days off unless they were for job interviews.

Did honesty, integrity, and character mean so little?
The plant I work at is closing in a few weeks. Every since it was announced, people have been calling in like crazy, taking lots of vacation that they normally wouldn't, and refusing to work overtime. To get their severance they have to work until July 9th. We have seen a noticeable reduction in production as well. I tell them that they're paid to do a job and I expect them to do it just like any other day. I was told tonight that I need to change with the times. It looks like you are taking this way to personal. As a former manufacturing plant production supervisor over several departments( 7 months retired) I can understand how you feel, but companies are really only looking out for the best interest of the company. I would lighten up on these people who are having their lives turned upside down by losing their jobs. Expecting production to be the same is going to be unrealistic for times like theses also. When you are in HR on your last day with your company and signing all of the legal paperwork to get you severance and unemployment , you will realize that you might have been a little to hard on the people doing the producing. I was there in 2002 after 28 years with a company so I can understand how you feel. Good luck with finding another job and take it one day at a time.

I think when you're a manager you can better see the interruption to workflow when people miss. I am the same way. Do the job, first day or last. Good luck in your search!

This is why in the restaurant industry, when a restaurant shuts down, you only learn about it when you show up for your shift, the doors are locked and there’s a note on the door informing you that the party is over. The one and only time I ever closed one it pained me greatly, I had a staff meeting to announce, anyone who didn't want to transfer to another location was given 2 weeks pay, additionally they could continue to work during the disassembly phase and be paid so they would be getting paid double during that time and we would accommodate any scheduling issues needed for interviewing. With the opportunity to make double the money while they job searched do you know how many showed up the next day????? That's right Zero! I had to bring in a temp crew to do clean up and move out. God forbid it ever happens again I'll lock the doors and give them a final check.
