Looking at keeping some at the house. What should I feed them little rascals?

I would think any type of freshwater aquarium fish food would work. Several anglers who post here have aquariums, hopefully some of them will reply.

Friend of mine who has an aquarium with a couple of sunfish in it uses regular gold fish feed he gets from Walmart. He as had them for awhile and they seem to be doing well.

Give them regular fish food from Walmart. You can spoil them every now and then by giving them some chopped up night crawlers!

I like to "feed" them pieces of crawler on a 1/64th oz jig hook. But that isn't gonna work for you. I would imagine they would enjoy some mealworms and crickets like you can buy at the pet store.

If you are keeping them inside floating Koi pellets work great and are very high protein.
That is what I feed mine that are outside in a 200 gallon pond. They also like minnows but will eat you out of house and home on those. I have 3 in my little pond and they can destroy 30 minnows in 24 hours.
Worms are good, they will eat corn and bread. But for high quality stuff go with koi food.

The reason I ask if they are inside is that if they are outside in winter they wont take the floating Koi food. You have to switch it up to shrimp pellets that sink. It takes them a while to figure out the pellets but once they get it... they get it!
They LOVE pieces of shrimp also. Like they crave that.

Heck, two dozen gills come to where I'm standing on shore when I feed them tiny pieces of bread daily in my pond. Must be like fast food for those fish!

What size fish?
For adults, I rotate between frozen Shrimp and Tilapia (cut up), Nightcrawlers, and Cichlid pellets (floating and slow sinking). Only feed enough to where its all eaten within 1 minute, if still hungry feed more. You don’t want uneaten food to sit around, that will funk up your water. If they are little, buy some frozen plankton, blood worms, and brine shrimp.

Don’t limit yourself to just BG’s, lots of other species out there with cool colors and different personalities.
