Okay - My story... It was only a $100 mistake, but I am happy with the results...
Got on a good bite before the 8am hour on day one. Had a 25+" fish in the boat, settled down and jumped back up on the front deck. I believe (this is how I remember it) that the NEXT CAST was a 24.25" over. Had to decide between the two. Couldn't get the balance board set up with ~18lbs of bass in my hands, so I judged that the longer one would be my best bet. I stopped fishing the area after that (didn't want to catch another over I couldn't keep) and headed to the first hour weigh in. I knew the boat I pulled up next to had a bigger fish (turns out it was the overall winner). I wanted to get back on those fish to find another (possibly bigger) one, so I weighed in first, knowing that I would be booted from the seat. Got my paperwork and headed back up to my spot... The bite had slowed down (and down-sized) I ended up getting a couple of more slot bites.
If it were a regulation lake/tournament I would've had 3 fish for 20+ pounds off of a spot the size of a dinner table. The fourth slot fish would have gone about 3.5 and I never got the "fifth", just a handful of non-weigher unders.
All in All, a good day that I am happy with - 2nd overall biggest bass out of 1900+ anglers... If only this was like the Sealy tournament where 2nd biggest bass is worth more than a, "congratulations, you missed out on a boat by less than a pound!"
