Thought I'd post a few pics and tell a few tales. Flew into Bangor on Friday the 14th. Good flights with reasonable connection thru Charlotte. A lotta lakes around Charlotte (and a lot of people). Very busy airport but reasonably easy to get around. Left Htown (IAH) at 0630 and was on the ground in Bangor Maine at 1445. There's a USAF tanker wing there so long runways. Buddy picked me up promptly and had a short treasure hunt to find Dos XX Equis before the 30 minute drive out to his place in the country. It was sunny and 72*

So Maine is covered with small to medium size lakes and all with different features. Our plan was to target pre-spawn females but it had turned warm and most of the water we found throughout the trip was 56*- 61* which means spawn for smallmouth. Saturday we went to Lake Wassookeag in Dexter, Maine. My buddy spanked me on bedding fish 3:1. We finished the day with 20 smallies but the biggest was only 3.2. I was disappointed as my biggest smallie, a 5 lber was from this lake.

Next day was a wash as we only had two smallies, both around a pound, at Swan Lake. My 1st trip to this lake and was not impressed by the fishing nor scenery as there's tons of camps around this lake. I think my buddy was convinced the fish would be prespawn but they weren't on the 12'-20' areas we fished and we didn't go hunting spawners.

So far my trip was unimpressive. Monday we went to a highly developed lake close to Bangor called Phillips Lake. This lake lays between some pretty good sized hills and is a couple of miles long. The week before my buddy had a 6.5 LM out of there but we were targeting smallies. Soon as we got here it was a bedfishing fest. With 10'- 12' visibility it was relatively easy to see the beds. This lake was clear even by Maine standards. Still biggest fish were 3 lbs and less. About 20 this day but all were sight fishing or shallow flipping to the shady side of boulders.

Pretty cool chainsaw art with beavers carved into this trunk.: note: water is around 6' deep near the camera.

Going "out west" next.

Great photos RayBob!! Looks beautiful there and it appears you had some nice weather. I figured it would still be jacket weather there.

Part II:

So my buddy, Dave, who probably fishes 75 days a year when the ice is out was wanting to find better fish and still looking for the egg laden females. His choice was to go west to Moosehead Lake which is Maine's largest inland lake at 44K surface acres. From the upper end of this lake you're pretty darned close to Quebec. We went to Lily Bay State Park. I'm used to Maine sceneray having lived there and visited frequently but this was by far the most scenic area I have been to in Maine. Mountains, deep water, lots of rocky shoals. Unique to me. We finally got onlo a consistent bite with square bills, jigs and of all things bubble gum zoom flukes. Probably 20 -25 fish but got into prespawners too with at least 5 over 4 lbs and my second biggest smallie at 4.5lbs. Great day!

Our last notable day we went to a lake called Schoodic. Never been there. Fairly big lake and we had a 12 minute run up lake. This lake is off the beaten path also. Started fishing in a back bay that had several islands and lots of rocky shoals and boulders. Immediately got into the fish on SK suspending jerkbaits. In 2 hours we had 25 over 3lbs and finished the day at 36 fish over 3 with 4.2 the largest. Most came off a rocky underwater wall in 6'-8'. One of my better flurries of SM fishing. [Linked Image]

Great weather. Mornings 47*-54* and afternoons in the 70's. Only rained on us the day we fished Swan Lake.

Maine is a bucket list kind of place. Went up there many years ago in August and it was flippin amazing.

Love Maine, especially in the autumn. Rangeley area is my fav for fishing - fly fishing for land locked salmon in the river. Don't leave there without visiting a lobster pound or two on the coast.

of all the dam yankees the mainers are alright but they talk funny.

spent a few months in bootbay harbor building this for a neurosurgeon from san diego.

snow skiing sucked, like being on ice. the house we had leased was on the bay and only about 200 yds from the lobster shack, bought culls on fri. for surf n turf.
got sick of lobster by the time I left. lol

would love to do some smallie fishin up there.
