Finally making the transition to circle hooks and quickly found out there are many different types. Any recommendations on size, type and brand for redfish. I usually fish live shrimp on a Carolina rig and sometimes cut bait or dead shrimp.

We fish the surf at Matagorda and use 7/0 offset circle hooks for redfish. We fish cut bait and some live mullet, double drop leader with a 4oz. spider weight. Went a couple weeks ago and 4 of us caught 27 reds.

I've had luck with the stainless steel 4/0 Gamakatsu. It seems to be plenty for bull reds as I've caught them with this hook, as well as numerous slots with live pinfish or mullet.
I'm not a chick.

I use either 3/0 circle with live or dead shrimp. Gamakatsu makes a sharp hook so does Mustad (ultra point). But I've also caught plenty of reds and black drum off of academy brand too.

Great information thank you. I ordered some x1 strength circles with the offset points. I imagine that will be plenty strong. The x2 and x3 look like they would present quite a silhouette. Thoughts?

Glad you use a Carolina rig as Reds are Sinker Shy.. I use only fresh cut bait for Reds, live shrimp is too expensive for Reds.

Glad you use a Carolina rig as Reds are Sinker Shy. I've caught hundreds of reds with a small piece of dead shrimp on a 1/4" lead head jig even in clear water. Also caught a bunch of them from the boat soaking shrimp on a knocker rig where the sinker sets right on top of the hook. I have spooked them when the weight was too heavy and made a big splash when it hit the water but not from a visual aspect.
