 How deep is too deep?

I went fishing for a few hours on a pond and caught a dozen or more, but after about 45 min I noticed 2 crappie that had surfaced and were swimming on their sides. I hooked all the crappie in the lips or corner of the mouth so no deep hooked fish. All were caught and quickly released.
I was catching them at about 12-14โ of water ( about 1-2โ off the bottom).
Yโall think it was just too deep for them to be brought up quickly? The other 10+ fish all swam off and never resurfaced
How deep before you have to just keep what you catch?
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

At 14 feet the depth was probably not the issue. Crappies are actually pretty sensitive fish. The fight, unhooking them, or other trauma can kill them quickly.

Usually for me it is around 25 ft

Just lay it in one palm and slap it with the other! It will burp or fa%t . Then swim off!!!!
