The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department records are slowly coming in. Here is the new greater amberjack catch and release state record I caught in July 2020. Often called reef donkeys, these fish fight to the bitter end.

I caught one in Costa Rica that 55” long a few years ago. Fought it for about 20 minutes and pulled like a freight train. When it finally came up to the surface, it fell off the line but just laid there. We reached over and scooped it up. Gave it to the deckhand and captain. They said it would feed their family for a week. We were fishing for rooster fish but it was a great bonus to catch.

It is easy to catch a big amberjack since they have a big mouth. Catching those fish with little mouths show much more skill.
