Been noticing that the crappie at Possum Kingdom are in bad shape, at least the ones I'm catching. They are razor thin and there's not much to a fillet. Downlake where I fish, shad are scarce an the ones I see are too large for them to eat in the 6-7 inch range. Fishing this week I actually caught one on a small perch which is the first time that happened. Guess you'll eat whatever is available when hungry.

Just wonder if anyone else is seeing this in a North Texas lake? I think a lot of the threadfins died during the cold snap. I know it froze the water in the Marina and destroyed a lot of motors. The cold spring has not helped, as it has delayed spawing and I am just now staring to see fogs of fry around the marina. The LM Bass and Stripers seem to be in good shape, so I think it's an issue just related to crappie and the size of the bait they need to feed on.

Not unusual for the crappie in the CenTex area to be on the skinny side right after the spawn. The fish are usually fairly thick across the back in Feb but after the spawn, they are thinner. Kinda like those bucks after the rut. And that feature seems to be exaggerated in years when there are cold fronts every 3-4 days. Water in the creeks got up to 65 fairly quick after the arctic cold spell. But every front dropped the water back 3-5 degrees. 60 is still plenty warm for crappie to spawn, but temps dropping 4-5 degrees don't agree with early spring crappie. The post spawn fish I'm catching now are on the thin side. Still some that haven't spawned, but they are a little thin also.

I agree with Ken. Not unusual for them to be pretty skinny right now. I do know that the brazos river basin has had issues with algae and I am not sure what that has done to the shad populations so it could be related to that also?
