Hi Folks,

My sonar was picking up this reading, but it looked weird to me. Are these fish being picked up, or is it some interference/junk at the bottom?

Thanks!

Looks like fish to me. Hard to see, but since you were stationary it looks like the fish were active.

Looks like striper to me. Put your graph on downscan next to the sonar next time. Seeing both at the same time will help you distinguish what you are seeing. Here is an example of what I run.

Thanks folks. I stopped to fish that spot but had no luck. As you can see, they were in ~40 ft, so I bounced slabs off the bottom and dropped a mepps #3 down, but no luck. Any tips on catching them that deep? I guess I need some live bait.

I’ve had the same problem. Once I started fishing with live bait with the same view on the graph, I started catching striper. Striper best bet is live bait unless middle of winter deadsticking with flukes. The first picture I posted was of white bass. This one is striper.

Here my take on what I see.
First colors on your unit show density of your target.
Notice the bottom of the lake in your screen is red. That tells me that the bottom is hard or dense.
Notice the fish in your pics have no red in them. This tells me there small and not very dense.
Notice the fish in the other posts.
They all have red in them meaning there dense or larger.

100% agree! Thats what my screen sits on 99% of the time when I am stationary.

Have a few more questions regarding readings. What do yall think of these readings? One has a few specks on the down imaging, but no thing showing up on the sonar.

The other one shows structure on the side imaging, some specks on the down imagining, but not much on the sonar.

Thoughts?!

Here are some thoughts.

The images you are posting of side imaging consistently show the right side to be less bright than the left. I’m assuming your transducer is partially blocked on one side by an outboard or something else. Do you have a picture of the transducer location?

What are the settings you have on the 2D? The next time you are out, consider taking a 1-2 oz slab and dropping it right underneath the transducer. Jig the slab off the bottom and see if you can see it on the sonar. If not, increase the sensitivity a little bit and see if it starts showing up. Example of what I mean below, and school of striper on same settings later that day.

Another thought, rather than being partially obstructed, is your transducer possibly mounted uneven?

I would say if you are seeing things on downscan and not on sonar that you sensitivity is set very low. I would increase sensitivity and see if those marks start to show up.

Good call. I will try that tactic with the slab. Will send a pic of the transducer mount this weekend.

Thank you!

I went fishing with my stepson last weekend. He has a new boat with Helix graphs on the front and back. He had the same issue, front graph the sensitivity was set way to HIGH and was picking up things that the downscan wasn’t seeing. The back graph sensitivity was set so LOW it was not seeing what the downscan was seeing. Set your screen to view the downscan and sonar on the same screen. Yours should look like my earlier posts above, they should be seeing the same thing.

Good info Randy. I constantly have to switch to downscan to figure out what I am seeing.
