Wife had a bone marrow transplant earlier this year. In short, she still can't be around people in a public setting, she's not supposed to get into water (other than a shower), she can't deal with the heat, she currently needs a nap most days once it get's to 12 noon (due to changes in meds), etc.

We have 2 kids, 12 & 8. We would like to do something, but I'm struggling to get wife on board with something she's comfortable with. Would prefer to stay in Texas but willing to travel.

I need some suggestions on where/what we could do to take these kids on a summer vacation.
Think of a place that would be a good fit for a grandparent in their 80's taking the young grandkids (12 & 8) on a vacation. That's probably what we could handle right now.

When you turn to the advice of the OT, you know you're at rock bottom.
So hit me with what you got. At this point, I'll take all suggestions.

Does anyone have a field of rocks? I could tell the kids we're hunting for diamonds....

Rent a lake house? I know she can't swim but the kids could and it can still be enjoyable.

That's a big bill to fill in Texas. Fort Davis, maybe? High enough elevation it's a little cooler than the rest of Texas. Dry climate. Lots of history for the adults. Lot's of rocks to climb on for kids. Could always branch off to Alpine or Marfa. Otherwise, I'd say New Mexico.

check the northern new mexico ski resorts for summertime activities for the kiddos, keystone and breckenridge etc. all had floom rides (long concrete trough you ride on a wheeled thingy).
would be plenty cool, trout fishing is close, raft trips on the chama and rio grande, horseback trail rides and probably one or 2 chuckwagon steak dinner places etc.

or go hang at the river in kerrville and tell the kids you are hunting pirates.

Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine. Plenty of eats inside, water park and pool, Bass Pro Shops around the corner. Grapevine Mall in the area and Main Street Grapevine for wine and food.

We always took our kids to South Padre and rented a condo on the beach. Lots of things to do there for the kids and Mom can stay in the room and watch all of you on the beach with binoculars if you get the right view. Taking bicycles if you have them burns up a lot of energy also. We always got one with a big pool and tennis courts if we just wanted to stay there. At night walking the beach with flashlights was always interesting for them. You can also cook what you want or do take out.

Family and I rented a place in Downtown Breckenridge, Co for a really reasonable rate. Some snow will still be in the mountains for the kids, but temps will be in the 60's at the lower elevation. Plenty to do for the whole family. Take a nice drive through the passes and canyons with the wife, take the kids on the gondola through town and the ski lifts up to the top of the mountains.

Thanks for the hints.
Several on here we already have been. Several others I've already suggested to her as well.

Mid July looks like is our time frame. That's when we expect baseball and softball to be done.

Problems with the popular places like Gaylord and Breck is we just can't. She can't be in those kind of environments.

kennerdude, rent a boat? Don't insult me like that again! wink
I think that I'm the only person whos family does not like to go out on the boat. And I have a 24ft Skeeter Bay with lots of room and a decent sound system. So not like I'm trying to pack a family of 4 in a 10ft v-hull w/ a 10hp tiller.

Keep them coming if you think of any places. Smaller, not crowded will be our best move. She can't be around alot of people.

Rent a house in Rockport on the bay. Most will have their own private pier and lights. We did it for my oldest 16th birthday several years ago and then I had to do it for the other two kids 16th. Good times.

Nice peaceful lake house with a view (vrbo or somesuch) let the kids bring a friend.

She can at least enjoy watching the kids from the house and enjoy early mornings and later evenings outside.

question is, assuming the BMT was for an illness is she in remission ? On the mend? Keep her safety in mind.
