So, any of you guys ever eat at the funky Smokestack Restaurant in Mingus about an hour west of Weatherford on the 20? I have driven by this place dozens of times and finally stopped a couple of weeks ago at about 1 pm. I have seen the parking lot jammed at different times as I drove by so I was surprised to pull into a gravel lot full of potholes and mud puddles. I went in and the interior looked as bad as the exterior but I was committed so I sat down anyway. To say the place is rustic is giving it a few notches above reality.

Anyway, the menu was pretty good so I ordered the Senior Catfish plate for $6.95 and the wife ordered the Club Sandwich which I believe was about $9.95. The Special on the board was Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, green beans, bread and homemade cherry cobbler for dessert...all for $8.95. I saw a few of these go out and the portions were huge. My fish platter came and I was expecting one or two catfish pieces since it was a senior dish.....wrong! I got six pieces of catfish, mashed potatoes, bread and green beans; it literally covered the platter. Best catfish I have ever had, period! Wife's club was made with slabs of real smoked turkey, not the deli slices you usually see.

They have a big breakfast menu, 1/2 lb burgers, steaks and almost everything one could want as long as you are not a queer or a communist. I give this place a thumbs up as long as you are not a stuck up Austin type in which case you should keep on driving down the 20.

There was a thread about the Smokestack about a month ago. It bounced around between New York Hill and Mary’s in Strawn. My wife and I had lunch at Smokestack last week and it was excellent although only one server made it slow getting our food. But it is very good in my opinion. And slightly less expensive than New York Hill.

Both are good, Smokestack and New York Hill. But I'll never set foot in Mary's again.

I agree with Stompy about Marys! Overpriced and Chicken Fry is overrated!

I do like the livers there though.

I was at Mary's about three weeks ago and my chicken fry was excellent, as was the chocolate pie. Haven't been to smokestack but New York Hill is also good.

I hardly ever drive past the smoke stack that they have more than 3-4 cars. It used to be a popular place years ago. We go to Mary`s 3-4 times a year , and I will agree that it is over rated but we have been going there for 30 years and will continue to do so. Never had a bad beer there either and some of them were free. Thank you Mart Tretter.

I prefer New York Hill; especially for breakfast.

We were at Smokestack for lunch and it was pretty busy a few weeks ago but only one waitress so it took forever to get our food. NY Hill usually has several waitresses and as salex said breakfast is excellent. I went by Smokestack yesterday on the Interstate and there was a bunch of vehicles out front during breakfast time.
