not true. there's always an element of luck involved.

Cut with her golden oars the silver stream,
And greedily devour the treacherous bait.

I rode with him many years ago, about sums it up an he was doing well in the event. Would have hated to been his marshall had he been doing poorly eek but honestly I think he just has his bad days. Probably a chemical imbalance thing but that's probably what also makes him great at times.

He's been known not to be the nicest or most personable person lol. I've gone to get his autograph and chat with him a couple of times at some expo's and registrations and I wouldn't waste my time again....

Did he ever fish a tournament out of tracker? I like the message he had with that one, don't recall him ever doing it though.

He fished the entire 2009 elite season out of an aluminum boat and this was before the nice big Xpress/Lund/Crestliners some of the pros use now.

Kinda where I’m at on him these days. Looks miserable and treats everyone like [censored]. Give me a Jay Yelas attitude any day.

Grouchy.

Not your average cat. Read the Rick Clunn Anglers Quest series if you can find it. Some strange stuff in there.

He's old and closer to death than most. So the closer you get the more you get to say what you want. LOL.

Never been a Clunn fan. He knows the science behind his career, but his personality if way off kilter. Too many peace pipes in the wigwam.

Some guys fish bc they just love to fish not make a million dollars in a year doing appearances and working for sponsors! Rick is a purist and a strange fellow but don't be disrespectful just bc he is different. I truly believe he did his best to try to be personable for the good of the sport(bc he was the face of the sport for a long time). I promise he would much rather be sitting on a mountain by himself than working a boat show or any event with alot of people. I have been lucky enough to fish around him and get to know him to an extent. He's in his 70's and has won 2 elite events. Think about that!

Several years back while a BASS Open was on Lewisville the BPS Spring Classic sale/show was going on. The Friday evening in the Grapevine store was pretty slow. I was there for a company and it was literally just a few vendors and customers. Mr. Clunn came in after he weighed in and he had gotten a hook in his hand that day while fishing per the BASS website. I figured he was exhausted and just wanted closing time to get there fast since he was doing an appearance. I gave him his space but after a few minutes he walked over and asked how busy the store had been. We struck up a conversation. For the next 2 hours or so he walked me around and showed me what he looks for in a crankbait and the differences in each one. We spoke about other lures as well. Eventually the conversation turned to family and such. He was extremely personable and I truly enjoyed the time spent with him. It was unfiltered and personable. He might not show that side much but I am glad for the experience and time he gave.

There was a story on Clunn last year, can’t even remember where I saw it, but he tore his rotator cuff (or something in his shoulder) and said that many times he wouldn’t weigh in his fish, because he couldn’t get them out of the livewell. He talked about how agonizing the pain was to fish and then he couldn’t reach that deep into the well. Sounds like maybe his shoulder didn’t heal and he just won’t come out and tell the world what’s going on.

It would make a lot of sense, if his should is the problem, being he was talking about guys whining over stupid stuff.

Was fishing at Rayburn one weekend with my two sons and my oldest boy recognized him and when my son tried to tell him what we were catching our fish on, Rick quickly said son I can’t discuss that, but….and he and my 10yr old son talked for 15min…he was telling my son some baits to try and all…he signed his BassCat cap and my son still has it .

He’s different for sure, but one of the OG’s of the sport we all love and I’ll always be thankful for the time he took to spend with my son at The Stump that night
