I hope the people in the Northeast get a nice dose of a fossil fuel free future they all want so bad. I am concerned that the refineries on the gulf coast will be severely impacted along with those workers who provide the feedstock. I hope they have a backup work around other than that they may have to pay a ransom in Bitcoin.

This outage will also affect the gulf coast refineries. They will not have an outlet for a portion of their refined
products. A large volume of ExxonMobil's exchange batches are delivered to Colonial at Pasadena.

For Pete's sake unplug these control systems from the Internet. Most aren’t on the internet. They are on a secure local network. They have field SCADA devices which make them vulnerable to entry by hackers. They can be windows to the network. Lots of data being moved over wireless. Plus on site someone can tie into the physical wiring such as RS485 links. The black hat guys who assess these systems vulnerabilities do all kinds of interesting things to hack into these networks. They write programs to guess passwords, find manufacturers back doors into the units, enter facilities, etc. They will send ransom ware through things such as email hoping someone clicks on the link. Constant challenge to keep ahead of the hackers.

Been there done that. More and more organizations are moving to centralized management systems and that just makes it a more desirable and a somewhat easier target for hackers.
