My second to youngest son is still learning to drive. He is older than most who start the process. He is what you would call in “The Spectrum”. A lot like Sheldon in Big Bang Theory. I’m not sure if he will ever be able to drive on his own, but there is only one way to know. Tonight, we took a turn a bit faster than we should have, tires squealing pretty good, a couple walking kind of in the direction we were kind of skidding past. They of course threw up their hands at us to slow down so we don’t kill them.
I get it, I was kind of afraid we were going to kill them too. It wasn’t likely, I think we would have missed them, but I don’t blame them for being a bit uncomfortable with the situation.
But after thinking about it, I’d like to tell them, man, I’m sorry we nearly ran you and your wife over. I know for about 20 seconds, you were very scared, but dude....I have been in this car for an hour and have felt like that the whole time, get over yourself.

Get a “Student Driver” magnetic sticker to put on the back of the car. People will give him more room and more time. This will allow the student driver to gain more confidence without everyone blowing their horn at them. It really helped my daughter who would get all flustered when someone hit the horn or yelled out the window.

I still have a couple of them from when I taught both of my kids to drive.

when I was teaching my daughter , we would wake up real early on saturday , grab some waters and get out on the road at daybreak ---- much less traffic , nobody walking around . She felt more at ease ---kinda like she was the only one on the road . After about an hour of driving , we would head out for breakfast together . Do it again the next weekend . It was easier to build her confidence , eventually , we started driving around with more traffic and more regular scenario's

When I was out letting my oldest daughter drive with her learners permit, we were driving down some residential streets. She was hugging the center of the road. I said, "Try to stay to the right of center a bit" and she moved way over to the right. There were a few cars parked in front of houses and to this day I don't know how we did not sideswipe them. You could not have fit a credit card thickness between our car and the parked ones. I was unable to speak for fear I did not want to scare her into jerking the wheel one way or the other. After we passed those cars, I finally was able to tell her " Well that was good but not so close to the cars that are parked".

I did parent taught program with both of mine. We took our time and they had lots of supervised time behind the wheel. I liked it because I could assess their progress.
Hardest part was finding the time. Started over the summer with my son. Once school started we decided to put it on hold until the spring. He had too much going in the fall.
That was 15 years ago. Dang. Time flies.

Teaching my son wasn't too bad. I also taught two of my friend's daughters. Both in college and both Engineering students. Those were interesting lessons.

Borrowed a go cart, took daughter to a big dirt field, have at it. Learned to steer into skids, and how to control your vehicle. Then we went straight to 130 toll road, 85 mph speed limit, and have her get after it. She got her confidence quick, and was a very good driver in short order.

Yeah? Try being the parent when your kid takes your 5.0 Mustang Fox body and does a total 360 burnout in the street, then takes off like a bat outta hell! (My parents nearly had a heart attack, Mom mostly. Dad knew I could drive).
