So there is a story on Fox News about a lady in California that was just arrested for using racial slurs to a delivery driver.
I don’t have a side but my question is this. Is it now illegal to make derogatory comments? A crime you can be arrested for?
I just find it hard to believe that it’s against the law now that I see people in NY and other states pouring beers on cop cars, slapping their windows calling them dirty pigs..... nothing happens to them so how can it be a crime?

This is a head scratcher for me. Lousy behavior, yes. A crime? No. Must be more to this story or we are going to see a bad person get a big payout (the white lady).

Some time ago I was in an oil change place in Lewisville and a lady got into a heated argument about the charges, during the conversation she dropped and F bomb and sure enough along came the cops who actually arrested her for disorderly conduct-language. So the charge could be disorderly conduct with a hate crime enhancement.

If words are inciting violence or intended to do so then yes. If your words are threats of violence, then yes. Those are crimes. You can be arrested.
If the speech causes someone a financial loss, its a civil matter that you can be sued for. Slander/libel laws. BUT you have to PROVE it cost you money. The FALSE things said or written about you or your company etc. directly caused financial impacts.
IDK the story here but if the woman called someone a slur or what not... that's not a crime in and of itself. Calling names no matter how distasteful and hatful they may be is not a crime.
Now if she was making a scene whilst doing that, it could be seen as disturbing the peace, of if she was drinking that could get her a charge for being drunk in public. You can be arrested for those.

I thought it wasn't a crime to hurt someone's feelings but if you throw a threat in there then it's a different ball game.
