Found a magic point today loaded with bait and bass, was catching one on just about every cast, then this happened
[Linked Image]
I took this picture against the black color of the motor for clarity, but me and my entire boat were covered by these little bastages. Thank God they did not bite. I think they are Midges but whatever they are I could not get away from them, even after moving two miles away at full speed I was swarmed again within seconds. No wind and 100+ degree heat I can handle, but this was TOO much!
Here is a close up so maybe some bug boy or girl can fill me in on what they are

Pulled up at Grapevine ramp one morning still dark. Met a friend at ramp who helped me unload the boat. Street light was on and midges were crazy thick. Made the mistake of leaving the window open and car on while we were loading our gear and unhooking the boat. By the time he backed me in and parked the boat we had at least 1-2 inches of midge throughout the truck, mostly on the dash and window sills. I'm still finding dried midge bodies and that was 3-4 years ago.

Now that I think about it the bugs were just an minor annoyance until I sprayed a second coat of sunscreen on, that is when the apocalyptic swarming started...Lesson learned, thanks!

Fayette has them all the time. They cover the surface of the water. When I used to kayak I was unloading once from my suburban and when I came back there was a swarm inside. I drove around the parking lot several times to no avail. When I got back from fishing the dead were piled up as much as 1/2 inch. It took me several years to get the smell out.
