New to me Tohatsu 225 motor. 2015 model.

The trim motor has been sounding "weak" for a couple months now. Almost like a low battery, but battery is fine. This was intermittent.

Today got to the ramp and it won't do anything. It would "click" when you tried raise or lower, but no other noise or movement.

Got out on the water, messed around a bit, tried again, nothing.

Then I tried to Tap the electric motor part of the trim. After a couple taps it worked a little. A few more taps, and it worked as normal.

Later in the day, went out again. A couple taps to get it loaded and home.

What do I need to do? Is this something I can fix at home? Sound like the electric part of the motor going out, but hydraulic stuff might be ok? Thanks for any help.

More info.

Here at the house, I can tap on the electric trim motor, and get it to work. It lowers fine. Raising the motor, it struggles. Especially once it gets higher than normal boating use. Like raising it up to trailer it... It won't raise up without me helping it manually. If I lift up on the lower unit and manually assist the trim motor, it will raise all the way no problem.

I am assuming the electric motor is just going out. Yes?

Can I replace myself, or take to shop?

Any shops around Mckinney you can recommend?

Tohatsu has has a problem with their trim motors. My brother in law has replaced his twice on a 2015 engine. The issue has been rectified and installation of a new motor $$$ will fix it permanently.

I replaced a couple on a Mercury. Not sure if motor and pump it in same location on a Tohatsu. The Merc I worked on had a jackplate (makes it easier) and cable steering. I removed the cable nut and the starboard motor bracket. I assume since it is a 2015 you have hydraulic steering. In that case remove the arm from steering rod to the motor. Mercuries require a long metric allan wrench. I replaced pump and motor with a new one. This was after trying 2 rebuilt ones. If motor is mounted directly to the transom you will need help unless you have arms like an ape. You will also need to seal the bolts when you reinstall. Things get a little wobbly with just on bracket secured. I left my transom saver hooked up. Again my motor was a Mercury. I had problems with tilt bleed down for years and dealer replaced seals under warranty. After putting a new pump and motor in the bleed down went away. With the problems on Tohatsus I imagine that there are You Tube videos.

Thanks for advice.

Here's an update, I can raise the motor all the way up and put it on those support jacks that are built in. After that I can remove the pin from the top hydraulic jack and tilt the trim system down. This gives me access to remove the electric motor off of the trim unit. Any thoughts on just trying to replace the electric motor?

Everything I Google and read it doesn't sound like I have hydraulic or fluid issues. It just sounds like the electric motor is not strong enough to raise, or the electric motor stops working until I tap on it.

This is the motor.

I traced the wiring back, and this is the plug at the other end.

The motor is a Tohatsu. But Everything on it says Honda. And this Tilt motor is a "Showa" which looks exactly like a honda setup from what I can google.

My question now, how do I know which electric trim motor to order? I feel like I can do this myself.

Anything over 60hp is a Honda labeled as a Tohatsu.

I appreciate the help.

I ordered some hydraulic fluid and a replacement for the electric motor. I'm goin to try to install it and see what happens.

I'm sure I'll be back to ask for more help.

I would keep the electrical motor that is giving you the problem and once it is off the boat would take a hard look at it. Water & electrical motors don't mix well. You might need new seals for the old motor or if it has brushes (new brushes). Your tapping on the old motor to get it to work, leads me to think brushes or a loose wire. Best of luck.

My old boat tilt and trim used to do what you are describing.. The seals break and water slowly gets in and corrodes the insides of the engine.. They are super easy to take apart and clean.. youtube it. I took mine apart, cleaned it with a wire brush, got all the gunk out... Checked the brushes, those were fine... just lots of gunk and corrosion. When you are tapping it you are breaking the seals that the corrosion makes freeing the motor. Once you get it all brushed out, clean it with gunk remover or carb spray... put a light coat of grease on the magnets and then seal it back with rubber sealant.. and it should be good to go.
