I’m about to do an “overhaul” on my bass rods and get some new ones. Just wondering what length/action/power y’all like for the following lures
I have a few medium action 6’6 Waterloos that I like to use for rattle traps and shallow cranks, but I’m wondering what y’all like for...
Deep cranks Shallow cranks Frogs Jigs Texas rig General topwaters (poppers, spooks, etc..) Spinner bait
I’ve always honestly just used 6’6 medium or medium heavy action for everything. But this go around I’m curious at what y’all use for each. I’m open to trying new things. (I already know which brand of rods I’m gonna get, I’m strictly curious about the length/power/action opinions)
Thanks

I use a Hvy, extra fast action 7'3" rod for jigs, heavier carolina or texas rigging and also light swimbaits. I like longer rods because I feel they cast further....so you can always add a few inches if you want.
Texas rigs on a Medium heavy fast action rod thats also 7'3'' and this is the one rod thats dedicated to texas rigging and i dont really throw anything else on
shallow cranks any glass composite rod bigger than 7 foot...bigger the better so you can chuck it further
dont throw the other stuff enough to have dedicated rods so the rest (beside deep cranks) get rotated on some type of M/H fast action rod in that 7-7'6" range

Look into phenix rods. I feel they are the best bang for your buck if you need sensitivity. I dont believe in being brand loyal and try to buy the best for what I want.......and im slowly transitioning to phenix rods! LOL my last 3 purchases were phenix's. Ive tried them on spinning and casting and have been impressed each time....just pay attention to the butt/handle length. Some have shorter ones....which I actually like and think it makes chucking baits easier. But if you dont like it...the phenix stuff might not be for you. Good luck with it...wait to the next sale so you can get 20% off on all those rods...cuz its gonna get pricey 😂

Deep cranks like an 8XD and 10 XD FXtreme 7ft 8in cranking rod. Mid cranks I use a FXtreme 7ft 6in cranking rod. Shallow cranks I have a couple of different brands of cranking rods all are 7ft in length. I use these for jerk baits and top water baits also. Megabass, Shimano, and Powell. Frogs....for walking the dog, I use a Dobyns Extreme 705 and for a frog with kicker legs I use a Dobyns Fury 735 Jigs 3/8 - 1/2oz I use a Power Tackle 7ft rod, 3/4 jigs I use a Power Tackle football head jig rod. Tx. rig I use a Shimano Adrena rod. Spinner bait and chatter bait I use a 6ft 8in FXtreme rod. For pitching I use a 7ft 6in Daiwa kage rod.

Damn guys what’s the deal with the big 7ft+ rods?? I’ve always been a basic 6’6 guy, longest one I have is 6’9 personal philosophy i think. Im pretty sure its for sure and established that the longer the rod, the greater the distance you can cast it. so thats a big reason/foundation of my personal philosophy on rods. Im sure the difference isnt huge....but I dont mind going over 7 foot if it could get me to chuck baits a little further. I also like the tips on longer rods....just for whatever reason ive had bad luck on smaller rods not keeping my fish pinned. Probably mental but I feel the longer rods help keep them pinned a little...maybe the longer tapers, i really dont know just my own feel/observations. I do go short and lighter action on my jerkbait rod (i dont throw these much tho), but aside from that im all 7 foot and bigger...but 7'6'' is about where I top it out at. Honestly...if the shorter rods work for you, stick with them. I feel like a lot in regards to fishing tackle falls back to confidence....sure some rods are better than others....but you know we all got that one cheap [censored] rod that we've had forever that just keeps catching them. Figure confidence plays a role in that a bit 🤔

Damn guys what’s the deal with the big 7ft+ rods?? I’ve always been a basic 6’6 guy, longest one I have is 6’9 Well it would be a little difficult throwing a 10 XD on a 6ft 6in rod. I use 6-9 rods for wacky rig, drop shot, shaky head and skipping docks. You said you wanted to try something different other than the 6-6 you have always used so why are you questioning the use of a longer rod?

dont sleep on tactical bassins buyers guides videos. theyre schilling product but ive never known them to recommend a crappy product. and they usually go into pretty in depth explanations for why they are recommending what they do. they go detailed into things like lengths and those specifics...so they might be a good watch before you dive in.

You need to match the rod and reel to the technique and the weight of the bait you are throwing if you want to be efficient.

The best all around rod I have come across is the Dobyns Champion 734C. If you can only take 1 rod, this is it. I have caught big fish on this rod while throwing half ounce football jigs to 10 inch worms to 5 inch swimbaits to 3/4 ounce spinnerbaits to weightless plastics to shakeyheads, trig, light crig, to throwing topwaters with braid or mono, it shines as a swimjig rod. It is my ultimate pond fishing rod. I have not thrown crank baits with it except rattle traps, if I am cranking, I am in a boat so I have rods for that.

Man the Dobyn's Rods DC805CB is a heck of a lot easier to throw the 10XD's on than my old 6' 6" and even the 7' rods I have!

Just stick to what you are doing with the 6-6 rods. I was just trying to help you out. Sorry you did not like the rod length I choose to use to be as efficient as possible.

I’m not doubting or opposing what you’re saying.. all I intended for that to mean was, I wasn’t aware that people used rods up to almost 8ft, as I grew up using the basic lengths up to 7ft. I’m making no opposition toward you man, all that comment meant was that I didn’t know that using those almost 8ft rods was really a thing. I wasn’t aware that they served a legitimate purpose for different techniques
