How many can scull a jon boat from the front?

Years ago I was the only worker at a lumber mill that knew how to do this and the boss loved to fish but didn't want to go to the effort needed on the White River in Arkansas. When he found out that I could scull we would go once a week and I sculled while he fished. Got paid my normal wage of $1.60 and hour from the time we left until we got back. My co-workers were not very happy with me the next day.

It's been a long time but that was the way we always did it.

Didn't have any of them fancy "Electric Oars" on our boats. cheers

Grew up sculling the back waters of the TN. River and Ohio River. Never was so glad to get a trolling motor to relieve that arm.

I haven't sculled a boat in over 60 years, but I think still could.

Nope but I did a lot of front seat 1 arm paddling in a johnboat. Finally got a used Pflueger TM. Reverse, neutral and forward switch. One speed. Magic.

I put a Dimmer Switch on the deck to make the trolling motor giddy-up-go. Didn't have to reach way forward to turn the motor on and off.

Yep. It helps to be a River Rat to know how to scull a jonboat. I would have missed about 10 years of fishing if I didn't learn the technique. Just couldn't afford a trolling motor. The theory back then was to make very little noise, move to the next stick up and tie up or clip on and fan fish the good stuff. That little short 2' 6" paddle was the ticket.

I too grew up skulling a jonboat. Spent many a summer day throwing a weedless frog and a black worm in the lily pads. In 1971 bought a 14 ft Monark with a 25 hp stick steer. Added a Shakespeare trolling motor and the lowrance green box. Game changer! I thought I was Bobby Murray.

Set many trotlines, yo-yo's and snuck up on lots of bass with this method. Had a 5hp motor for a pusher but when I got close to the fishing spot it was sculling all the way.

Every poor a$$ Arkansas HillBilly, myself included, knew how to scull paddle. The hard part was owning or borrowing (with or without permission) a 12ft Jon boat.

We waded streams then when the electric trolling motor came around we jumped on that... Dan

Grew up in the forks of the Neches/Angelina rivers. Had a 14' Buddy boat with a 5 1/2hp Johnson and a short paddle. That set up was waaay more stealthy than my current BassCat or any modern day sparklewagon. When I was about 15 I came into possession of a 13' pirogue that I'd drag up and down the rivers behind that old Buddy boat. It was the ultimate stealth machine.
