I have two sets of acetylene and oxygen tanks that we purchased in the 80’s. Someone told me you now have to have proof of purchase before you can fill // swap them. No way I have a sales receipt from 40 years ago. Have y’all ever run into this?

Not sure since I pay $$$$ to rent mine on a yearly basis from Airgas. Check with them or even Tractor Supply since they exchange.

Don’t mess with Tractor Supply. The make you pay a certification charge to use their tanks. Go to Airgas or some other gas supplier and you should be good.

Are the necks slick or is there a name on it?

That makes all the difference.

What do the rings in the top of the tanks say? Go to a smaller shop and not airgas. I use west air in Saginaw with no issues. Mine have customer owned rings in them.

They need to be pressure checked and certified at times. Much like older propane tanks, they have a lifespan and get swapped out. If you go to one of the cryogenic gas stores like Praxair Distribution, Airgas, or Linde, they can help you out and test it. Compressed gas isn't something to be taken lightly, so be safe.

I have two sets of oxygen and acetylene tanks that I carry in my truck for my torch when I need a refill I just swap them out a a supply house. This goes for my C02 and nitrogen tanks. I have done this at Home Depot, Airgas, and Mitchell’s as well and never been asked for a receipt.

This is good to hear. In the past I have just swapped the tanks out. The last tanks I got about 2 years ago has some mans name written on them in a paint pen. The others have nothing.

I did not know Home Depot would swap tanks.

Some of the Home Depot’s carry gas I know the one I. Rockwall did I’m not sure about Rowlett.

I just called Home Depot and found out the stores in Rockwall, Mesquite, Garland, and Richardson will exchange cylinders. Thanks for all the info.

They all have to be tested every 5 years ( DOT ) high pressure test . Look at the top of the tank and it will have a test date - month and year , or a spin date on the top also .

I own a welding supply in Haltom City. If the bottles are the large (200 cf oxygen/145 cf acetylene) size, welding suppliers rent and sell those bottles. Since so many get stolen and taken home that are rented, the “owner” needs to be defined. With the age of the ones you referenced, those are out of test(10 years).

A picture of the neck ring and shoulder label is the best way to determine original ownership.

As for smaller sizes (150 cf and lower), most welding suppliers sell those. Thus “ownership” is who ever has possession.

I get this everyday. Who owns the bottles.

Most do not fill on site. A swap of the cylinders is the likely transaction. Thus “your” cylinders may or may not have a company name on the neck ring and label. Once the company name is on the neck ring or label, suppliers are not supposed to take bottles for swap from another company. Back to who owns the bottle.

Additionally many of the large distributors have acquired other companies without changing neck rings. So the name/ownership becomes convoluted even more.
