When do you know its time?

The old man is 14 and struggling to finish his food, getting cranky more and growling/nipping at the kiddo when he gets too close (he's never bit him or got a hold of him, but still) and struggles to get up some days. I hate even thinking about this.

One of the hardest decisions you have to make, and it doesn't get easier as time goes on.

You know it's time when you ask what others think. I've been through it five times and that is enough for me. You will meet up again one day.

This week is the first time I have even thought about it... I'm gonna get him to the vet and let them assess, but man this makes me sick. He still has days where I swear he looks like he was running down my birds for me. I miss those days!

As other's have said, when you start asking how do you know it's time, it's probably time.

Had to do it more times than I care to think about. Just know that while it hurts to do it you're stopping them from suffering any more.

I think you know the answer to your question. It’s definitely got wrenching for sure. I stayed right beside the last two that we had to have euthanized.

Definitely have the vet do an assessment. He may have an infection or something affecting his appetite and temperment.

I have had to put down 2 in the last few years. The first one I knew it was time...the second one I knew the time was close, but I figured I had at least 6 more months (he had congestive heart failure). He had either a stroke or heart attack, on the way to the vet in the middle of the night and although he did survive, we made the decision, because he wasn't going to recover.

I am truly sorry you're dealing with this. Dogs are awesome and we do not deserve them.

still wag his tail when you get home?

If so not time yet.

We have a Corgi that is close, she has an appointment friday to possibly remove a bad eye. If she still wags her stub I will try to keep her going.

We put her buddy down two years ago that was awful.

Just got home and went to check on him and maybe I didn’t notice this morning, but his lymph nodes under his neck are swollen... Vet can’t see him until Monday. I have some Dermamex he has been prescribed, hopefully that will help him out for now.

He always meets me at the door. It’s just the last week or so he has been acting strange, now the lymph nodes, I hope it’s just an infection or something and not cancer. He has a pretty insane pain tolerance and I hope he isn’t hurting.
