Nobody seems to mention the argument that took place way back then when these floaters were found -
One school of thought says - When the fish dies, it starts to absorb water, adding to the weight.
The other school of thought says - When the fish dies, it starts to lose water and mass, therefore dropping the total weight.
Then along comes a third school of thought that says - The fish dies and absorbs water adding to the weight but then after 5 to 6 days, the fish starts to let go of the water and reduce the total weight.
Then the argument rages over what people think the fish actually weighed when it was alive.
No matter what, they were certainly true giants. Did fork have a world Record bass swimming around in it back then?
The argument still rages on.

I will tell you this with certainty. A live fish left in the livewell overnight will gain a few ounces. Seen it with my own two eyeballs.
