Fishing a lake that does not have shad, but has plenty of bluegill. Should that be the go to bait, both live and cut, or do you think the cats would go for cut shad also? Just seeing what opinions may be, on this. I'm taking both, as I cannot keep or use the bluegill from this particular lake. (If I want to stick to the rules 100%) Yes, I think it's a dumb rule too.

Blue and Channel Catfish will eat almost any kind of cut-bait. I have caught them both on bacon, cut carp, drum, tilapia, and sunfish. Flatheads like live bait much better than dead bait, but I have also caught them on cut-bait. Shad should work great. Let us know how you do.

Take the shad. Cats are going to eat it... Bet if you took shrimp, they would eat those too... none in fresh water and cats love them.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Blues will eat just about anything when they are hungry Z especially smaller eater sized blues but you are right in your thinking about providing them with what they are conditioned to eat each day and what they key in on in a particular fishery especially the larger blues. Giving them what they are conditioned to eat can definitely increase your success. I wouldn’t be afraid to use Shad anywhere in Texas but I would also make sure to give em some sunfish if the lake doesn’t have Shad in it. Might not make a bit of a difference on smaller fish but it could make all the difference especially if you get into some toads.

I agree with Chris, I have cleaned fish and found bream, crappie, white bass, yellow bass, just about anything that makes up the biomass in a body of water. Blues are apex predators. But in my opinion, if you give them what the normally feed on, you would have better success. I would have more confidence in those baits that they feed on naturally. I know you can't use sport fish as bait in Texas but I would like to see what would happen if you could. I think Shad would still out perform about anything but it would be an interesting experiment...

You nailed it on the head Tim. I can tell ya with 100% certainty that there are several baits that will outperforms Shad 90% of the time. There are quite a few larger blues that hang around the Shad that don’t actually key in on the Shad. A certain percentage of toads are there feeding on what’s eating the Shad. This could be striper, sandbass, crappie, hybrids, black bass, or a yellow bass. We fish up in Oklahoma 3-4 times per year where your allowed to use gamefish as bait and it has outfished Shad almost every trip over the last 15 yrs or so.

My son and I were cleaning some eater size blues and one had
this small cat in his gullet.

It's a private lake, on our property down in Bluff Dale. Killer Bee has made a video of it.

There are supposedly some real hogs, in this lake, and that's what I'm going to be targeting. Very small lake, (102 acres) so if they're there, I should be able to find them on the sonar easily. I wonder how many accidental introductions of shad into the water body would it take to establish a population....lol.

I've caught catfish on private water with Shad. Perch should work fine though. As well as any other species in the lake.

I cleaned a small eater the other day maybe, 20 inches long and he had a 7 inch long shad in his belly. I couldn't figure out how he got that thing in his mouth let alone down his throat.
