I am looking at buying a 25 Hp 4 stroke Mercury outboard tiller, I am curious if anyone has any input on performance and speed of the tiller with the prop and the one with the jet. I am wanting to put this on a 16โ alweld aluminum Jon boat.. raymond.sizemore@gmail.com

The prop motor will be a lot faster than the jet.

You can look it up on line. The manufacturers of some companies will tell you what the equivalent hp is of their jets at the water. I looked at them years ago. A 60 hp was like a 40 hp. Donโt quote me on that! I decided to put float pods on my boat and raised the motor a notch. And stayed with prop.

Don't know about the jet, but I do know about the prop motor. It won't get out of its own way.
We have a 25HP max lake here near Kansas City. Great lake, lots of tournaments. Several guys have bought new boats with the 25 HP 4 stroke Mercury. I doubt they will run more that 14 - 16 MPH on a 16' jon boat.
I have a 1648 Lowe Big Jon with front and rear decks, 24 V trolling motor and more gear than the local BPS. I GPS with a full load at 26.2 day in, day out. In winter with light load and good heavy air, I have hit 28.
Old, good running 25 HP 2 strokes bring good money here.
Couple guys have 25 Yamaha's. Look like they run.
Unless you are not in any hurry, or not going very far, I doubt you would like a 25 jet.

What did it cost to get the pods on the boat. I have thought about getting that done

Yep those old OMC's were runners. The truly older ones were much larger in CC size. That is why they were stout!

Before my hull got beat to heck, I cold run a solid 30+ (GPS) with 4 adults in my 14' express jon with my 25 Tohatsu. Hunting load was only about 22-24. I have a friend who is all things jet and when I questioned him about converting, he advised against it. He said the loss of speed and power with a 25 is substantial, he runs a 60. He also said that the way I would use it would be nothing but problems. He runs the rivers, not lakes. Great setup for running skinny and rocks, not so much for grass or mud..

I had a 4 stroke 30 HP Honda on a 16' 48" War Eagle with a pro deck and it would run 28-30 (GPS) day in and day out with just me in it and I am NOT a light weight. Some times I wish I had not sold that rig.
