Just thought I would share some interesting facts during my quests for fishing white bass.

Detroit River white bass are residents of Lake Erie...the water is really blue and pretty and so the fish take on that color. They are often referred to as Silver bass. The “Silver Bass” run starts about mid May when the water temp finally hits 55° and will continue through the end of June. The fish will start working north up the river from Lake Erie toward downtown. Walleye fisherman come from ten states and Canada and crowd the river until the “Silver Bass” start moving up. These fish are considered a nuisance and walleye fisherman will call it quits on their season because they cannot get their jigs down to the bottom. The demographic changes quite drastically as well. The middle aged white male leaves the river, and Asians and Black people along with myself, will move in. Strangely enough the Amish folk also come in to harvest fish. You will often see the whole family in one little Jon boat stuffing their coolers full. I have spent occasions cleaning ice off of the eyes of my rod in order to continue fishing for them.

In Texas, as you know, the water is a bit more muddy and red due to the clay. So the fish take on a more brown color. Many often refer to them as “Sand Bass.” The run here starts on Valentine’s Day and goes through to the end of March. We consider them fine table fare and spend money on guides to go catch them. We even have tournaments for them and often love getting our kids and grandkids involved as they are such a fun fish to catch. During the run we will load up $1000 of dollars in equipment and row it down the river to spot no one has been. We will battle gale force winds on the main lakes, often risking capsizing, in order to catch that 25th fish.

I love fishing for these fish. I have caught them in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas. I thought I would share some interesting things that I have experienced along the way.

I’ve also noticed the fish are slightly different in shape. The silver Bass are shaped more like a football. The sand bass have a flatter top section up by the dorsal fin.

Grew up in Detroit area doing exactly what u have said. Was annoying catching them
When going for walleye!!!!!! Now that I’m down here I love catching them mainly for the hope of hybrids and or stripers to be mixed in depending the lake. When I wanna eat I go for
Crappie closest to yellow perch and walleye IMO.

Coachzee, you know exactly what I’m talking about then.

I chase the whites in hopes for a hybrid or striper as well. I don’t eat many fish, but when I do, I eat the white bass, or catfish. The lake closest to me is Waurika, just across the Texas/Oklahoma border, it has both striper and hybrid from what I’ve heard.

Thank you! I’m actually headed up the last weekend in April to get in on the action. Round trip flights from DFW to Detroit was $60 and the boat ramp is 10 min from the airport. Good thing I have friend with a boat that can pick me up.
