Not sure about the lake, but the Cimmaron River is not like the LMF where it is nearly 100 percent dependent on stocking for trout. You are not going to have to fish right below where the stock in order to find fish, so just find a fishy looking spot and go at it. If you want to be on fish for sure give Tim at Eagle Nest Fly Shack a ring. https://www.eaglenestflyshack.com

The Cimarron is mostly wild browns with stocker rainbows near the access points and campgrounds. Advice would be to gain access in the state park, then hike at least a mile to get to good water. Fly is absolutely the best way to catch the browns - take a shorter 3 or 4wt rod with a box of dries and pheasant tail droppers. Mostly tight quarters fishing and you need to be stealthy, but the payoff is beautiful browns that love to attack dries and droppers.

Eagles nest lake you need a boat or float tube. Bigger stocker rainbows, carp, northern pike.... not my bag, but i know it can be fun. Take your spinning outfit here.

Eagle Nest lake also has an invasive yellow perch population that someone decided to stock themselves. Many Kokanee salmon also. We caught 5 of those for each rainbow. Just below the dam are the "Holy Waters" with huge browns but private. Check with 'Doc", a fishing guide and he may be able to get you on. All the other advice is spot on.

I spend a lot of time in northern New Mexico. The Cimmaron River is quite technical due to the tight quarters you'll encounter. It's a beautiful river and can be fun to fish but if you are just learning, make the short drive to Red River and fish there. You can fish the river in town, or drive west and fish the lower river around the hatchery. You'll also fall in love with the town, much more than Eagles Nest. Enjoy and good luck.

Folks, its Eagle Nest. At the lake you can fish from the shore also, the lake is still down even after the snow melt. We rent Kayaks at Eagle Nest fly shop if you want to get on the Lake also. Stop by and see us, we will put you on fish. Also Late May, early June we usually have a hugh Mayfly hatch.
